VISIT OF SIR J.G.WARD.
TSB RAILWAYS AND OTHER
MATTERS.
The Hon. Sir (Joseph G. Ward arrived in i&unednV on Monday, and proceeded to his nsual quarters at the Grand HoteL
. Sir Joseph states that the department will take over the management of the dining " cars on the* Hurunuf-Bluff sect-ion on April 1. It ia intended to improve the. arrangements by altering, the- cars internally, and the menu; will be superior to that provided hitherto. Under the, contract, system thecontractor, after paying, a high rent* had, to make, a profit,, whereas the policy of the- "}. department would -B* rather to? giver a,- goad ,*, * service than. to_ conduct the, cars from a . revenue poinfc- of view. ..Ai&the end of" this •.-month- the sale.%of,,into2cica.tng -liquors? at railway refreshment, .rooms, will cease, but the. rooms will continue to be run as re- " fi*esnmfin,t. rooms under- the supervision of mn officer of. the department, - Mr Gf. W.
' Eraser, until- recently manager o£ Warner's^ J Hotel- in C&risiehureh.-
-~No further trouble is^ajiticipated by Sir Joseph in connection -.with the amended *' patent jnedicine regulations. The principal < firms engaged in this business were quite content to lodge the formulae with the " PubHe Health. Department.
Sir- Joseph does no.fc think it is necessary • fco esfsaßUsh a sa-natorium for consumptives
in.th©- South Island', this proposal having
•- been superseded by the legislative provisions ~m_ade> in respect to consumptive\annexes to existing hospitals. These annexes could be . established, within a reasonable period, and -.' inaddation the medical stags connected with \: the hospitals could undertake- tie necessary -- supervision, thus, doing away with the neees"eity for a. separate staff, Another advanj'Jfcage ©£ the annexes to existing' hospitals, /"towards the erection of which the Govern- - snent. gave a subsidy of 24s for every 20s z Bpenfc.- by; the Hospital Board, was that it is desirable that consumptives should be in the districts to which they belong, . ,as their relatives and friends were usually \, anxious* to have opportunities of seeing them, and patients themselves desired to be " near their friends. The accommodation at the Cambridge* Sanatorium was proving c quite inadequate.
: - . Quite a shoal of applications have already ■"Ileen;reoeived from all parts of the colony pjop the post of secretary to the International iJixhibifion to be held at Christchuren ;', Captain Gfeenstre&t, of the Rimutaka, •7 Interviewed by a. Timaru Herald reporter, : said he had had great difSeultv in pielSng ' up the Jack's Point, light, south of Timaru. He thought the Marine Department had - made a mistake in not erecting a flashing- - light there. Timaru was a difficult port to make at night, and should hav-e a lit/tt that could be distinguished fiom an ordinary town light.
