SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The ordinary meeting, held on Thursday, January 12, was attended by the Coninaissioner (Mi- J. Hay), and Messrs J. M'lntyre, A. Kinross, D. King, and Jno. M'Lean.

Notification of Mr D. King's reappointment as member of the board was received.

The Under-secretary intimated that the Minister had agreed with recommendation that the pastoral runs and miscellaneous licenses in the extension of the Southland land district be allowed to expire in the ordinary way, and not reclassified or renewed. — Received.

The Under-secretary notified that it had been decided the maximum' rate of interest on mortgages to Crown tenants must not exceed 8 per cent., and that such mortgages could not be approved if a higher rate were charged. Henry Hammond, jixn., and other settlers in block VIII, Winton Hundred, desirous of obtaining some high land adjoining their present holdings requested that sections 54 to 57 be subdivided into areas of about 50 acres. — The board could not see its way to corn^ly

with the request, but the seotions will be opened in the ordinary way as soon as possible.

W. Toogood applied for grazing right over section. 3, b.ock XXIII, Wairaki, Beaumont, 352 acres, and offered 3d per acre per annum.— Granted.

Mrs M. Chamberlain applied for rebate of one year's rent on section 21, block VIII, Waiau, Merrivale, on account of loss of hoiise, furniture, etc., by fire, and o£ illness in family. — The Minister to be recommended to grant a rebate of one year's rent— £2B 10s 4d.

T. Chamberlain made a similar application in reference to section 35, Merrivale settlement, on account of loss of dwelling by fire and loss of £33 by failure of Invercargill Dairy Supply Company. — Minister to be recommended to grant request, and allow £47 8s rebate.

M'Lachlan Bros.' application to cut sawmilling timber on reserve in block V, Campbelltown Hundred, was refused, and resolved that land be permanently reserved for recreation purposes.

A. Wilson and T. Lobb applied for grazing license over sections 15 and 16, block TV, Mataura Hundred. — Held over for ranger's report.

Mrs A. J. Blackburn was granted exemption from residence on section 80, Edendale, as she resided on adjoining section.

It was decided that Mrs Robert Bannatyne be given notice to clear the whole of reserve at East Dipton of noxious weeds within one month, otherwise the license would be cancelled.

E. Sheehan having explained the cause of delay in sending money for flax on section in Beaumont settlement, the resolution cancelling acceptance of tender was rescinded.

The valuation for improvements on section 60, block I, Waiau S.D., was reduced to £10, and it was decided to readvertise the lease locally.

The Commissioner submitted report of the Classification Commissioners on pastoral runs the licenses of which expire on February 23, 1906.— 1t was adopted.

Murray, Roberts, and Co.- requested extension of license of the Burwood Run, Otago University endowment, to the end of March next, and offered £50 as rental for that month. —Held over till inspection by members of the board.

Thos. Tangney was granted grazing license over abandoned sawmill area No. 415, Jacob's River Hundred (200 acres), at £ 1 per acre, subject to tramway rights of Messrs M'Callum and Co

Ranger Collins reported inspection of sections 352, 354, 355, 356, 373, 374, 358. 362, 369, 367. and 364, Forest Hill Hundred, clasisfying all be light bush land under "The Biis-h and Swamp C.L. Settlement Act, 1903." Most oj. the sections contained sawmi'lling timber. — Held over.

G. T. Queale was granted title to section IS, block VIII, New River Hundred, on payment of purchase money.

Transfers were granted as follows: — Section 48e, block 111, Mataura Hundred, Cbas. Morgan to C. Clarke; section 30, block VIII, Waiau Public Trustee (in estate of P. King, deceased) to Jno. King; pastoral run 491b. Tuturau, Mrs M. Cameron to W. H. Hole and C. W. Comer; pastoral run 423b, Waikaia, R. S. Black -do Mrs E. H. Pinckney; section 20a, block IX, Glenham. Public Trustee (in estate of P. S. Todd) to Mrs M. xJuggan. Time was given T. Hodgson to effect improvements on section 8, block VI, and section 3. block VII, Lindhurst Hundred. Lists of amounts of thirds and fourths accrued and proposals for expenditure were received, as follows: — Southland County Council, £84 16s 3d; Wallace County Council, £352 2s 4d. — Receiver authorised to pay over. The following applications were granted. — Mrs Margaret Hall, section 43, block VIII, Campbelltown Hundred; George Mawdsley, section 74, block 111, Mataura Hundred; Mrs E. C. Mawdsley, section 75, block 111, Mataura Hundred.

The applications of A. Anderson and Mrs A. L. Gower for sections in Campbelltown Hundred were cancelled, the, deposits not having been paid.

Geo. Mawdsley was granted exemption from residence on section 74. Edendale, as he was residing on an area near by.
