Sustained' by- Mr Acton- s> death. - After a good deal o£ correspondence- had been dealt with, a petition, in regard to the-pea-rifl© nuisance was- received from. Saddle Hill and- Brighton- settlers. In- the- course of discussion Mr Orbell pointed out tiiat the law as it- stancls at present prohibits shooting- within a given ■ distance from a road', and gives power, to property-holders to' prevent, people going, on. to.' their, land',, and to ( prosecute" if necessary. The _ question, of sheep-stealing; also came up>. and it was- decided! that the Government, be* respectfully requested- to take, some j steps to- formulate a scheme to prevent a* continuance of the- practice, and that" the-'co-operation of the Sheepowners' Association be- asked. . A discussion arose over" the question- ot anthrax, the importance of" which to- the whole colony was urged. It was pointed out that the closing of the sterilising- works was a. very serious matter, and 1 that the appoijatmenfc,. by. way of alleviativa. of an inspector, thousands, of miles.' away was a dangerous experiment. It was resolved to respectfully request the Government to- reconsider usdecision in the matter of closing the works. or if not, to consider the 1 advisability or. prohibiting altogether the importation cf - O Thfr appointment of an official organiser .■was considered, and the special committee srt up to go into the matter recommended that a. deputation consisting of # J* less * s Clark-, Ross, and Buekland be appointed to 'wait upon leadins. landowners and companies- to go into tlie- matter and" report to «iext meeting. ~~ AUCKLAND, January 13. At a meeting of the Farmers" TJniontne following recommendation was adopted:- " Tfiat farmers be advised not to sell the new, season's, paten sheaves and chaff of prime- quality at less than £4- and fi* 10s w ton respectively, delivery in Auckland."
