PATEAROA v. NASEBY.

A good deal of interest was centred in the cricket match Patearoa versus Naseby on Saturday. Both teams held an unbeaten record this season, and the result, which practically foreshadows the winners of the Maniototo County premiership, was eagerly looked forward to throughout the district. Both teams .were represented by their strongest available players,^and the Naseby team in particular had been practising assiduously to endeavour to wrest the coveted honour held by Patearoa last season. The match took place at Patearoa, where the visitors arrived at 10 a.m., the game starting immediately afterwards. The day was fine, but a strong wind was blowing.

Patearoa, winning the toss, sent the visitors to bat, and as every *man in the team realised the importance of the occasion no risks were taken, but the bowling and fielding were so good that when *^ c ' as * 1 wicket fell the score had only reached 70 runs, to which nuirober H. A. Boddington (19), H. W. Hilton (16), and K. Marshall (15) were the principal contributors. The best bowling averages of the home team were J. Johnstone five wickets for .19 runs, and M'Lean and Chirnside each two for 24.

The Patearoa men then confidently started their task of passing their opponents' total, but with the exception of W. Johnstone (8) and E. Carr (6), none of the other players were able to make any stand against the destructive bowling of D.- Marshall and R. Horswell, and all were disposed of for the small total of 30. Marshall's average was seven wickets for 19 runs, and Hors*well secured two for 9.

On going again- to the wickets the visitors played with more confidence, and at the call of time had made 185 for six wickets. Of this total Boddington was responsible for a splendidly put together 65. Horswell (35 not out), J. Hore (25), K. Mai-shall (14), J. P. Malcolm (13), and Hilton (10) also batted well. Patearoa tried nine bowlers, the best of whom were W. ; Chirneide (three wiokets for 26 runs) and J. Johnston© (three for 64).

In the first innings the fielding on both sides was remarkably good, that of Kirk (Patearoa) calling" for special mention ; but in the second innings Patearoa failed to maintain their usual excellence.. The wicketkeeping of Boddington (for Naseby) was of a very high standard. The visitors speak in cordial terms of the hospitable manner in which they were entertained by the residents.
