STUD NEWS AND NOTES.
— The deatii is reported of the Chain shot — Red Ensign mare Red Banner, who was a fair performer on the turf. She was on a visit to Obligado at the time of her death. — The imported stallion Obligado obtained first prize at the North Otag-o show, beating
the Australian-bred Dirk Hammerhand, who is geneia-lly regarded as a fin* stamp of a thi roujrhbred.
—It is reported that Mr S Bradley -would not take less than -62000 for Wairiki, as the son of Soult is well worth that sum for a stallion. It is possible that the horse is worth double that amount, as he is a particularly fine stamp of an animal, and one of the best racehorses we have had, but unfortunately he is a member of the Yatterina family, aiid his pedigree peter 3 out, which is a fact that will not tend to enhance his value as a staihon.
— Amongst this season's visitors to Royal Artillery is St. Lucia, the St. Leger — Hilda mare, who was well fancied for Seahorse's New Zealand Oup, but for which she did not start. St. Lucia, who cost 42Sgs as a yearling, became partially paralysed across the back, and was given by Mr Stead to his stud groom, "W. Franks, who, after a> Jot of care and troubl-e, succeeded in getting her fairly sound. She has since produced twice to Curasow (Cuirassier — Albatross), and as she is a sister to the dam of the well-performed Mahutonga she should make a valuable brood mare.
— Gh.iva.lry is credited in a, northern paper ps being a son of Medallion, but Conqueror (Medallion — Siesta) is responsible for the paternity of the speedy gelding, who has proved a great bargain at £25 paid for him. Chivalry is one of the first of Conqueror's get, and, like Conal and Ability, has plenty of pace, but is not noted for courage. Chivalry was considerably distressed after each of his laces at Ricearton, and although his performances read so well it is quite possible that considerable improvement can be worked in his condition, and consequently in his courage, as it is frequently lack of condition which makes a horse a quitter.
