OBITUARY.

News was received by cable from Melbourne on Sunday by Dr Evans, of this city, announcing the death of his father, Mr W. Evans, formerly of Otapiri Estate and Bayswater, Scnithland. Mr Evans, who was 67 years of age, came to the colony from "Wales when quite- a young man, and was one of tho fast diminishing L-ind who knew th-e Gabriel's Gul'y field in the zenith of its glory. Fcr a number of years ho was eng'ag-ed in mining pursuits in tho Blue Spur district, residing in Lawrence, and he then purchased a large property at Otapiii, Southland, wh.ere he resided until within tbe last few years, spending his time between his estate and his town lioiTse in Dunedin. Some years ago he purchased a. lavge section of the famous Bayswater Estate at Orefci. The deceased gentleman was very well known throughout Southland, and the rcnouncemont of his death will be icoeived with regret by a very large circle of friends arul acquaintances Latterly he. had resided in Dunedin, but being troubled with a weak heart l:e left about a fortnight ago for Melbourne to avoid the winter here. A cable was leceived on Friday st-atrng that Mr Evans was very ill, and the new 3of his death was received on Sunday, as stated. Tha deceased gentleman leaves a widow, who accompanied him to Melbourne, And a family of bons and daughters, all grown up, to mourn their loss. His eldest son is Mr E. Evans, chemist, now in the Mataura district; the second is Dc Evans, and a third is manager of ike Otapiri property.
