COURSING.

DUSEDLN PMJMPTON COC USING CLUB.

— First Day. —

The June meeting of the Dunedin Plumpton Coursing Club commenced at Forbury Park Dii Wednesday afternoon. The plumpton was in fairly good order, with the exception that there appeared to be a little water lying about near the escapes. The attendance, considering the cold, drizzling nature of the aHernoon, was very good, and the utmost keenness was exhibited in connection with the running off of the courses. Towards the termination of the afternoon the light -became very bad, and the work near the escapes was not seen without difficulty. The,qua.lity of the hares was good, with the exception of the first two liberated, whdeh appeared to be rather on the weak Bide. Sport commenced fairly punctually at 1 o'clock, and, with the exception of some slight delays, was kept going with a, fair amount of despatch up to the finish. The card left a. good deal to be desired, us although it might not be possible to furnnsh the breeding of dogs in one or two instances, it is at least imperative that the colour and sex should appear. The press accommodation is a matter that wants looking to badly. The club, under pressure, certainly provides a table in the stand, but the crowd that continuously gathers in front of it makes a. sight of courses run an extremely difficult matter. Some provision might be made, with but very little trouble, in ithe judge's box in front of the stand, where, xrith a small table, press representatives might do their work with some degree of comfort. Nothing of any moment occurred during the afternoon with the exception of the course Ijetween Matagowrie and Cornet in the first around of the Bracelet. Matagowrie appeared to be running unsighted in both his courses, and subsequently proved himself a " duffer" liy refusing to follow he's game at the termination of the second bout. Mr A. Aitken acted as slipper, and was fairly successful, though ihe was inclined to allow his dogs to get hung ■up occasionally. Mr Rultledge capably filled the position of judge, and gave unquestioned verdicts throughout the afternoon. The following are the results of the coursinS '~ LADIES' BRACELET. .Winner, £40 and bracelet ; lunner-up, £20 ; one dog, £10; two dogs, £5 each. First Round. In the first round Heather Lad (2 to 1 on) led up by four lengths in a short run to the hare. He then turned, and Simplex came in and wrenched, and finished with a good run and a clever kill. The judge signalled an undecided. On the couise being run over again -leather Lad led up by over four lengths, and Simplex came in, turned, and did not allow her opponent to score up to the tims puss escaped. Wonderful (4 to 1 on) led up Fleet by three lengths in a short course, and, killing, beat Fleet pointless. Motor led up Winifred (2 to 1 on) by five lengths, and did all the business until puss escaped. Winifred worked very wildly, and ran over her game. Hero Yet led up by a little over a length, and in some work on a good, dodgy hare showed to advantage. Afton Water (G to 4 on) terminated the 'course by killing. Erin (2 to 1 on) had a decided advantage in the run tip, Innisfail appearing to momentarily get unsighted. After the first turn Eidn worked the game and killed. Matagowrie was unsighted," and Cornet (2 to 1 on) drove t£e hare . to cover, the judge signalling course. In th-e run-off Cornet led up by ovei half a dozen lengths, and turned. Matagowrie then came in, but Cornet went by and killed. Tonic (3 to 1 on) led up by about 10 lengths, and allowed Lady Bell to come in only off his work. Lady Bell finished up by killing near the escapes. In the urn up Daviia (6 to 4 on) led by pbout a length and a-half. He did most of the business atterwards until puss escaped. Both Davis and Romeo were running over their game. Feu-de-joie (5 to 1 on) led up by about five lengths, turned, and allowed Runaway Girl, besides appearing to put in a go-bye, to do very Mttle work until puss escaped. Red Runner (2 to 1 on) led up by about six lengths and_fell, and thus allowed Bell Boy to come in, wno, after working his game fairly well, lost possession, and Red Runner drove puss to cover. Myoti (6 to 4 on) led up by about eight lengths, and in a short exchange, in which Little Nell diid next to nothing, drove puss to cover. Diamond Jubilee led up Kioto (6 to 4 on) by about five lengths to a good racing hare, and showed more pace and cleverness on the gamo until it got away. Tatts (6 to 4 on) led up by aboiit three lengths, and. after turning, ran over his game very badly, and Cannonball, getting possession, did most of the work until puss got away. Berlie Bill led up by a little over two lengths, and in a quick course Tho Witch (5 to 1 on) came in for a clever kill. Stealaway (2 to 1 on) led up by three lengths, took a couple of turns, and then lost to The Duchess, who had put in a little woik when Sfcealaway came an for the kill. Sickly Sam (2 to 1 on) led up by close on seven lengths, and was responsible for nearly all the work until puss got away. In a good run up Musket (5 to 4 on) came from behind and led Blackberry by about a length. A good exchange took place, in which Musket showed to advantage, and the course concluded by his killing. Reckoner <2 to 1 on) had considerable advantage in the early part of the lea-d up, but stopped on the game, and got in by about three lengths' advantage. From that out he outwoj«ed, and finally gave Mfiss Kearney the go-bye, as - he drove the hare to cover. Pearl Shot (2 to 1 on) led up by about thjpee lengths, and after an interchange Tim Whiflßer terminated the course by a kill. Rose O'More (2 to 1 on) led up by about five lengths, and outpaced, and outworked Lou Dillon in every point of the course until puss escaped.

In the second round of the Ladies' Bracelet Wonderful (2 to 1 on) led iip Simplex by five lengths, and did all the work until he killed near the escapes. Motor (2 to 1 on) led up by a good two lengths, and outworked Hero Yet at every point. Erin (8 to 1 on) led up by close on lour lengths, and allowed Cornet to do practically none of the business until puss got away. In a long run up Tonic (2 to 1 on) was first to the hare by close on two lengths, aiid from that out Davis had very little to do, and was only going in on Tonic's work up to the time the game got away. Feu de Joie (5 to 1 on) had a lead up by over four lengths, and in a good interchanging course Red Runner terminated with a kill. Diamond Jubilee (4 to 1 Q.n) led up by about three lengths, and terminated a. short coiirse with a clever kill. An interesting " go " took place to the hare between Cannonball and The Witch (4 to 1 on), and the first score appeared to go to the latter. An interchange took place, in the middle of which both dogs fell, and on getting to the game again The Witch terminated the course with a kill. Stealaway led up by close on six lengths, and did nearly all the work until puss got away. The betting on his opponent, Sickly Sam, wa? 2 to 1 on. Pearlshot (2 to 1 on) led up by close on 12 lengths, and outshone Musket until he (Pearlshot) killed . Reckoner (5 to 4 on), in a good mil up, got about a length's advantage at the finish, and from a good exchange, .in which he did most of the work, had possession when puss got away.

Iv an interesting run up Reckoner passed Pearl Shot (5 to 4 on) and beat him to the hare by close on three lengths, and although he slipped badly twice in working his game had a good scoie in his favour when Pearl Shot kiLcd. lii the fourth round of the Ladies' Bracelet Feu de-joie (C to 4 on) put in a mcntoilous lead, but Wonderful worked off his opponent's score, and had the best of the business in a long course until the game got away. In an interesting run-up to a good haro Lieutenant Bill had slightly the advantage at the finish, and after an interchange puss was driven to cover by Vagabond (6 to 4 on).

— Second Day. —

The weather was again very cold and wet for the second day oS the June meeting of the Dunedin Plnmpton Coursing Club, which was held at Forbury Park on Thursday, rain falling throughout the afternoon. As a consequence of the weather experienced during the last few days there was a good deal of water lying on the plumpton, and this was in some degree responsible for more than one spill to the dogs. The attendance was fairly good considering the weather was so bad, and that many followers of sport were tied to business and could not therefore be present. Mr Aitken showed great improvement 011 his first day's sapping, and Mr Ruttledge easily maintained hi 9 reputation as one of the best judges of coursing that has ever handled the flags 111 Dunedin. He is deserving of all praise andthe best thanks of the chib for carrying out duties at no time too agreeable, but especially disagreeable under existing conditions. Mr J. Loughlin very kindly supplied market quotations both yesterday and the day previous. Merry Boy wa3 unfortunate in his course with Waterloo in the second round of the Open Stake, owcing to his collar getting over one of his eyes and causing hini -to run blind. He ■subsequently proved that the foim he disployed in the course was wrong by easily beating "Vicar of Wakefield in the latter's bye. In the cc-tirse between. Pearl Shot and Reckoner the foimer was made a 5 to 4 on chance, but honours easily went to his opponent. In the final of the Open Stake Vicar of Wakefie-ld somewhat surprised onlookers by showing much better form than was expected, and after leading Faugh-a-Ballagh up easily scored an advantage throughout. Some excuse might be offeied ior Faugh-a-Ballagh, because of the fact that he "was suffering from the effects of being " savaged " some few days back, and had a couple of nasty wounds about his neck. The final for the Ladies' Bracelet produced one of the best, trials of the niestmg, the honours of the covirse, however, resting with the Oamaiu dog throughout.

The following are the results of the day's spcrt: —

LADIES' BRACELET. Winner, £40 and bracelet; lunnei-up, £20; two dogs, £5 each.

[r the second lound of the Open Stake Fau^h-a-Ballagh (i to 1 on) led up by about six Jciigths, and had pract.ca'.ly possession throughout until piiss got away. There was an interesting " go" to the hare between Waterloo and Merry Boy (5 to 2 on), the latter gettrrg there first by about half a length. Atter the first turn Merry Boy lost possession, and Waterloo worked and killed. Vicar of Wakefield (2 to 1 on) dwelt a trifle from the s.ips, but laced past Lieutenant Bill, and had two lengths' advantage la the lead up. He aiterwards. did nearly all the work until puss got away. In the third round of the Open Stake Faugh-a-Ballagh (2 to 1 on) had about three lengths the best of an interesting lead up, and after some inteichanges of woik terminated with a kill. Ueny Boy was put in with the Vicar of Wakeneid m tae latter's bye, and led the Vicar by about two lengths, and beat him pointless up to a kill. In the final of the Open Stake Vicar of Wakefield led up by about two lengths, and hs>d all the best of the course tmtil Faugh-a-Ballagh (3 to 1 on) came m 101 a kill. Durakon of course, 49sec.
