AUCKLAND TOPICS.

Tsr Tatuoa.

June 20.

On Monday and Tuesday afternoon last the stewards of the A. R.C. Club considered the protest lodged against the stakes in Ihe Pakuranga Steeplechase, run on the last day of the club's winter meeting, going to the horse Kiatere, on the ground that the conditions qualifying for the hunters' race had not been complied with. After hearing a large volume of evidence, it was decided neither of tho four con peting horses, Kiatere, Taranaki, Star, and Tuni, had, for various reasons^ complied with the conditions, and the lace was declared null and void, and the club decided to return all money invested.

The owners of the jumper Haydn were not long in scratching their horse after the weights for the Victorian R.C. Grand National Steeplechase came to hand, and the general opinion is that Mr Menzies placed too high an estimate on the Auckland horse in allotting him 12.5. This Is fully a stone more than any New Zealand weight-adjuster would be prepared to allott Haydn in. the same race, as though good, he cer.ainly does not come under the heading of a great horse over fences.

The new owner of Gladstone, the full brother to Gladsome, has backed the colt for a fair stake to win the New Zealand Cup.

Papatu has been shipped to Hawke's Bay, where he claims an engagement in the principal steeplechase, to be run on the second day, (Friday) of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting. I should say that Evening \vill take most oeating in the race in question.

Information has been received from Australia to the effect that Mr Jno. Peters, of Maungataroto, Auckland, has drawn the third horse in Tatt's. consultation on the Brighton Plate (Ta.3.), value £400 net.

The yearling colt by Phcebus Apollo from Miss Gladys, purchased by Mr Siinnielhag at Mr Friedlander's disposal sale for 255g5, has been resold to Mr W. King, -ibe ownei of Miss Lottie. The half-brother to Gladsome will m ail probability be allowed to mature in the Waikato district.

The Bill of Portland- filly Portland Lass, knocked down to Trainer J. Taggart at Mr Friedlander's sale, was purchased on behalf of Mr J. B. Reid, the well known Canterbury sport and breeder.

F. Davies, the well known Auckland horseman, has been retained by Mr E. J. Watt, and he will have first call on his services during next season.

Roseshoot was shipped back to Napier during the week. The Great Northern Hurdle Race favourite's dickey leg appears to be pretty well right again, and it will probably not be long before ll"s fine horse is m commission again.

Bonheur, the three-year-old sister to Nonette, has been sold to Mr Conrick, a well known Palruerston North racing man. The daughter of Seaton Delaval and Charante has so far proved! somewhat of a disappointment under silk, having only one winning bracket to her credit; but maybe the change will bring about an improvement in her.
