THE LIBERAL LEAGUE
SPEECH BY LORD ROSEBERY.
LONDON, June 11. Lord Rosebery, addressing 3000 members of the Liberal League at the Queen's Hall, said the league was endeavouring to rescue and differentiate sane Imperial- I ism from a shoddy, advertising, terrifying Imperialism. He viewed the Empire as a sacred trust, and regarded with the deepest suspicion any attempt to J underrate Imperialism and risk the ! future of the sacred heritage. While the predominant partner remained unconverted there was no possibility that the next Liberal Government would attempt to establish a parliament at Dublin, especially since the Nationalists had opposed the Liberals on education, temperance, and fiscal questions. The Liberals were fighting Protection both in the open and in a more dangerous and insidious form. He considered the 1 Anglo-French Agreement one-sided, and doubted the wisdom, of handing the Moroccan coast to a great military Power.
