LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.

PROPERTIES IN CANTERBURY AND OTAGO.

Mr A. Barron, Lands Purchase Inspector, while in the south, inspected several properties that the Government may acquire for closer settlement, though in some cases that contingency is a remote one owing to the prices asjeed^ Among the- places visited (3ays th'e^ NevT Zealand Times) was Cracroft (formerly tta property of the late Mr Cracroft Wilson, of Christehurfch), a block of 6000 aores near the RangifaS, Rive-r, afioufc 80 miles fromf Chris£churcn. Another blic© of very fine country is some 8000 acres at Pareora— part of the famous " Levels," and oftned by the executors of the Elworthy estate. A small holding of between 1100 and J2OO acres on the Timaru-Fairlie line, ojjrijgd by the Gillingham Bros., was also inspected; The two largest properties under offer to* the[ Government were in Otago— the well-knowp Gr'e&nfielci Estate, of 24,000 acres, situated efff tHe left bank of the Olutha River, and owned bj? the beneficiaries of the will of the late Mr Jaf^fes Smith ; and Clydevale, a fine block of 32,000 acres, not far distant.
