The autunrn meeting o£ the Australian Jockey Club commenced at Randwiek to-day. The weather cleared beautifully, but ths course, sfter the lecent rains, was hea-vy. There was a very large attendance. Gladsome made the running past the stand, and going out of tae straight Sweet Nell drew up with the favourite, ths pair leading along the back tc- the sixfurlong post, where Gladsome was just in front oi Sweet Nell. At the half-mile the pair were again level, 'but rounding the bend Gladsome forged ahead, an-d entering the straight drew eway, and it looked as if the New Zealand-er was going to win easily. Sweet Nell, however, came gallantly, and a great race ensued, the favourite being beaten by a head. The result was entirely due to the superior horsemanship of Lewis. At half a mile Chere Amie ran up in'.o second place, three lengths in front of Playaway, who was closely attended by Contest. Cheie Amie entered the straight ahead of Contest and Haloya, and a great race home between Chere Amie and Contest resulted in a win by a head for tho former ; Playaway, six lengths off, third. Passing the stand; the order was Sweet Nell, Alias, Gssian, and Marvel Loch, the re=t of the field bunched, well up. There was little change along the back excepting that Marvel Loch improved her position and Lord Cardigan moved up into fourth, place. Sweet Nell led Marvel Loch into the straight, a packed field lying handy. Then Lord Cardigan shot out on the inside opposite the St. Leger stand, and, going great guns, woa by three lengths.
