A RECORD RETURN,

If proof were needed of the richness of the bed of the Kawarau River it was supplied on Saturday, when tlie- magnificent letmn of 12650z lodwt for one week's woik was reported from the Electric No. 2 dredge. This is the largest amount of gold that has yet been won within the space of one week by any dredge )n Otago, and is, cf course, a lecord for New Zealand. As far as Otago is concerned, the next best letum was won by a dredge m the possession of the same fortunate company for the week ending July 9, 1900 . that return was 12340z. For two weeks' woik in Maich, 1900, the Hartley and Riley dredge succeeded in winning ISoooz; -?,hile 245D0z of gold was won as the result of four weeks' work m the month of August, ISS9, by the same machine. Other splendid returns will also be fiesh in the minds cf those who have followed dredging operations dunng the past year or two, and an indnstiy that can furnish wealth such as this must be considered no small factor in the progress of the country, even though the country has given to it much of its hard-earned money.
