IN MEMORIA M.

(Written in memory of Mr F. A. Joseph, who was instantaneously killed at Otago Heads, while or journalistic duty, Jarmaij 29, 1904.) He went to the post of duty, Not dreaming the time had come When Death should check Life's current,

And Earth be no longer his home; He fell at the post of duty, In a. moment, without a sound, He ceased fiom this worlds toiling 1 ,

And rest unexpectedly found. He was called? from the post of duty,

Whilst wielding the ready pen; We cannot solve the pioblem,

Of why he was taken then. It may be some task was waiting In a higher and purer sphere, And God m His love and wisdom

Could leave him no longer heie.

So the cheery voice is silent,

The kind heart beats no more, The hand has lost its cunning,

Its penmanship is o'er; Friencfs miss the kindly presence,

And loved ones weep in gloom, For he of the pleasant manners Has vanished into th© tomb.

But God, who reigns in heaven, Rules also the things of Ea.ith, And caiefully He garners The grain of the greatest worth; So, wiclow, be not hopeless, And, fatherless children, smile, The paitmg that came so sadly It but for a. little while. -E. a. ,M^r_aiiifttoiU £i&±m£\ 1204
