WELLINGTON, February 5.

At the Magistrate's Coui t to-day William Shmnpton (railway telegiaphist at Greatford), Thomas No' an and John Walker (mail earners, oi Bulls) weie charged with conspiring to defiaucl cprtain bookmakers m connection with the races held at Bulls on Jpimary 1. The case for the prosecution showed that certain telegrams were sent by Nolan signed by Nolan, Walker, and Jeckelton, fiom Bulls to Shrimpton, at Grsatford, for transmission to various bookmakers m different parts of the colony after the laces on which bets were to be made had been lun, and Shrimpxon, by ante-tiniing them, made it appear that they had been handed m some hours befcichand. After the hearing had proceeded for a while pleas of " Guilty" were entered on behalf of Nolan and Shumpton, and they were remarked for sentence to the Supreme Court. So far as "Wa'ker's case was concerned, it was submitted that no case had been madp out aga.nst him, cwlence being tendered that Nolan had not told him of what he had done until atteiwards. The ca<=e against, him will be further considered to-mor-row. The idcos to v.'h.ch the telegiams leferred were those won by Ballarat and Bless Bok. Nolan was a stewaid of the Bangmkei Racing Club. February 8. Thomas F. Nolan a;id G-eorge W. Shrimpton, who pleaded " Guilty " to conspiring to defraud bookmakers by means of ante- timed t°legrams, came up for sentercp this morning Thejr were admitted to probation by tlie Cluei Justice.
