LA WRENCE.

January 31. — The long spell of hot weather lifts bi ought on the crops very hurriedly, and here and there small patches of oats are being cut. In ano-ther week or two haivesting operations will be in full swing, and I think th yield will be quite up to the average. The town supply of water has been so short of late as to necessitate its being cut off from 5 o'clock p.m. until 8 a m., making one dread. 1 the consequences- shou.d a fire break out m a thickly-built portion of the town during these hour3 — probably the result would be much the same as at Gore a few days ago.

Vi'hat a boon to the Teviot fruit-growers a railway would have been during the present bountiful season? They have impressed into their service all the available teams, with, American waggons, spring drays, express waggons, and carts, and still the fruit is ripening so fast that tons upon tons have to be thrown away. It is a sight at the Lawrence lailway station to see the fruit conveyances coming in every evening with loads varying from one to eight tons. I think the average daily quantity of fruit sent from here by rail for some time back would exceed 25 tons.

On "Wednesday the United. Presbyterian, and Church of England Surday Schools' picnic will be held at Mount Stuart, and a more suitable place to hold it would be difficult to find.

Very sincere regret is felt here at the sad news of the untimely death of Mr Joseph, who was well-known and highly esteemed by a large number in this district.
