DUNEDIN CYCLING CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT. The following report for the season 1902-1903

will be submitted n£ the annual mc&ting of the Dunediu Cy-ohag Club, to be held at the club rooms on Mo.iday evening, 24th hist. : —

Your Committee have pleasure in laying before you their annual report and balance sheet.

The balance sheet shows a credit balance oi 1 £28 Os 4d, while the assets of the club, after allowing lor the usual depreciation, now stand in jxcess of the liabilities at £136 3s 4d.

Your Committee regret that not sufficient interest was shown regarding club runs, and therefore none took place. Unofficii.l runs were, however, indulged in bymembers throughout the so? son, and these tended to create a feeling -that better prospects may be entertained for the coming year. During the year the rhib held two road races, one being from Saddle Hill to Henley Knd back, and the other from Saddle Hill to Waihola. Tha former race was open to all rocmheis of affiliated clubs, and was won by A. Welch, who received a pair of Paris road-racing v im 3 and tyies, presented by Messrs Johansen and Co., Auckland, and £2 2s from the club ; W. Munro secured second place (prize, trophy £2 2s), -with A. M'Mohon third (prize, j£l Is), and N. Balaton (JEI Is) recorded the fastest time. The latter race was for members only, aucl was "won. by A. P. Fleming, who received a valuable gold medal presented by Messrs Bey and Stokes, with A. Craig second. The League of N«w Zealand Wheelmen's championship meeting was this year allotted tt the club, and took place on March 21 last. Thanks to the energetic efforts of an excellent Sports Committee (with Mr A. J. Sullivan as secretary), a profit resulted, and this in face of a postponement owing to bad weather. The day on which the meeting was held was also far from pleasant cycling weather. As will be seen, from the balance sheet the expenses were heavy, and the Sports Committee is to be congratulated on showing a credit balance on the meeting after payment of such a large amount. The lacing for the championships was of very high order, a feature being the introduction of motor cycle lacing in Dunedin. The Sports Committee place on record its appreciation of the way it v.as met by the Caledonian Society in regard to the use cf the society's ground for the meeting

During the year auclire tournaments, billiard tournaments, aud musical evenings were held, all proving successful.

Several of our oldest members, having started in business in other parts of the colony, have left Dunedin, notably Messrs V. P. Boot, J. Fredric, Captain M'Millan, and Dr J/B. Sale, The thanks of the club are duo to these gentlemen for services rendered, and wo are sure members will join us in wishing them success in their different ventures.

The committee desire to thank the following donors to the c'.ub's funds: — Dr Fulton, Messrs A. A. Finch, W. B. Bell. A. J. Sullivan, Dey and Stokes, and Johansen and Co., of Auckland.

Thanks are also due to the president of the c'.ub (A. A. Finch. Esq.), P, Y. Wales, Esq., the Otago Centre (Messrs Minn and Wall), the delegate to the League of N.Z. Wheelmen (F. M'Kechnie. Esq.), to the- Caledonian Society of Otago, and to the press for the prominence given to cycling matters.

In conclusion, gentlemen, your committee can only express the hope that the club will go on in the way it 18 going, and that tho esprit de corps which h?s always existed among members will long continue.

' Says the Auckland Herald: — "Some Ponsonby residents have recently had doahrngs with two men who seem to have hit upon a novel way of earning a dishonest livelihood. To qucto a case: A lady answered a knock at tho door a day or two ago, to find two men tlicre, who urged her to purchase a picco of mu&ic which one of them produced. After a while tho men requested to be allowed to play over the pieco upon the lady's piano. She agreed, and tho music vendors proceeded to play it, the pretty melody proving so enticing that the ladydecided to buy tho sheet. The money (2s) was- paid ovor, and then one of the m©n politely notified the lady of the house he was thirsty, and asked her to oblige him by getting him a drink of water. This she courteously went away to procure. On. returning to the room she found her musical visitor* had departed, taking with thorn tha pretty pipce of music and the florin they had received for it."
