THE CORN DUTY
LONDON*, June 23
In the HoiT-e of Commons Mr Chaplin's amendment to the Finance Bill in favour of the retention of the coin duty was rejected by 41G to 32. In the House of Common*- Mr Chamberlain, in reply to~ a question, announced that Lord Tennyson would return to England in December. His term as Governor-general was not renewed.
The Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Bill passed through the Grand Committee after nine exciting sitting*.
Mr Ritchie, replying to Sir H. Camp-bell-Bannerman, said that only the first ten millions of the Transvaal war contribution loan were guaranteed. Sir M. Hicks-Beach suggested earmarking certain Transvaal receipts, otherwise there would be a risk of losing the second aud thfrd contributions.
Mr Chamberlain admitted that there had been valuable find^ of diamonds in the Transvaal.
Sir M. Hick.-Beach lias been elected chairman of the Select Committee appointed to inquire into the question of the incidence of the income tax.
A conference of those members of the House of Commons who are interested in iron, steel, engineering, and electrical industries meet on Thursday to arrange a vigorous crusade in support of Mr Chamberlain's policy. It n expected that 130 Unionists will attend.

The Divorce Bill, introduced by Lord Russell, was negatived in the Hou<-e of Lords on the motion for the second reading without division.
