BRUCE POULTRY SHOW.

ANNUAL SHOW.

The twelfth annual show of the Bruce Poultry Society was opened in the Coronation Hall, Milton, en Wednesday afternoon, and was patronised by a fair number of those interested in poultry. The judging wae clone in the morning by Mr P. C. Sinclair, of Mosgiel, who got through his work with expedition, and whdSe decisions, as far as was heard, gave general satisfaction. The entries this year wore about 50 less than on the last occasion the show was held, and the falling off is mainly attributable to so many birds being away on exhibition at Timaru. The falling off in entries was principally confined to Leghorns, buff Orpingtons, and Wyandottes. Minorcas were a good cla^s, and several of the birds shown would ha\e been hard to beat anywhere. Messrs A. and C. Grant were the chief prize-takers. There was a very fine show of Langshans, a particularly good hen being exhibited by Mr J. Magee, and taking first .and special. Black Orpingtons were probably the best all-round lot of birds in the show, and the buffs were also a firstrate lot, the cock bird, belonging to Mr J. Taylor, in the latter, well deserving the first, special, and gold medal it received. Silver Wyandottes were another good class, the cock bird shown by Mr W. G. King being well ahead of anything in competition with it. Golden Wyandottes were a fair lot, as were also the whites, which were a small class. Some very fair birds were found among the Hamburgs, and in the novice classes were some birds good enough to win in open competition, this appiying especially to Wyandottes. The black and buff Orpingtons in the novice section were also remarkably good. Of ducks and pigeons there were very few exhibited. As will be seen by the prize-list, Mr J. H. Shutt was the only exhibitor in Hamburgs, and had no less than 17 of these birds entered. A number of children's pot* were shown, and there was on exhibition an incubator and assortments of poultry-yard! requisites. The cages containing the birds were well arranged, and with the spacious hall in which the show was held there wae an entire absence of the crowding frequently seen at similar shows in the country. Nearly all the officers of the society worked hard to make the show successful, and at their head was Mr J. A. Duthie (president), whose efforts were ably seconded by Mr J. W. Petrie (treasurer), and Messrs J. Taylor, J. Burn, D. Allison, J. Bremner, T. Allchin, J. Simpson, sen , J. Paul, J. Simpson, jun., E. G. Reid, and G. Weldon (comnntte^nen). The secretary (Mr C. L. A deputation from the Gore Retailers* Association waited on Mr R. M'Nab, M.H.R., at Gore on Friday in order to bring under hia notice the state of the law respecting imprisonment for debt. It was pointed out "that dishonest debtors could take advantage of the fact that proof had to be produced as to a debtor's financial position before an order could bo obtained to secure payment of a debt. Mr M'Nab said he believed the present law was passed to prevent debt-collecting companies from harassing debtors while the principal remained in the background, and that it was never intended to work in the way it wa3 doing. He promised to look into the matter, and do what he could to remedy the defect.
