CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By Frit.

During the past week Mr J B. Reid lost another foal, the latest to go being Heimosa's. I mentioned this one last week as one of the three that had died, but it was the Sant llano — Savannah colt that comuleted the trio.

Trotting matters will occupy a good deal of attention this j?eek. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club and the monthly meeting of the Trotting Association will be held on Wednesday night, and the annual meeting of tho New Brighton Trotting Club on Friday night.

The biiance sheet to be presented at Friday night's meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Cub discloses a satisfactory financial condit.on. The receipts foi the year, including a balance brought forward of £60 11s lid, amounted to £1962 10s sd, tha. chief items of ic\c-nue beirg totahsator £10-26 Is Gd, nomination? vi.d acceptances £507 17s 6d, and gates £215 8, Cl. "The club gave away £1345 m ■-take", Co- ornment tax accounted foi £ - IGS 15i 'Jj, and rent of couise £70, the ciecht balance at the end of the year being £6G 13s. The assets of the club amount to £'J*26 13s, ar.d there ar^> no liabilities.

The declaration of thp weights foi the New Zealand Cup has not caused much stir among backers so far. The handicap ha^ been freely criticised during the past few days, but no great fault is found with Mr Henrys's adjustment, the general opinion being that, w.th the poor lot he kad to deal with, he has made a \ery good handicap. Orloff, Lady Liihar, and Ilulbpidier are the three that hud mo=t favour with the emits at present. Within the nest week or two we may expect a htt'.e more mtdest to be infused into tln> discussion.

The scarcity of hurdle and ateeplecha'p hoises with any pretensions t< class had led to the ldpa that the Canterbury Jockey Club i-ould obtain a poor response on Friday night, when nominations were cue for ths principal events to b© decided at the Grand National meeting. The publication of the lists therefore occasioned some surprise So fai as numbers are concerned, the lesult is very '■atisf.iclerv. The quuhty, howevt-r, m tiip jumping races is not so reas=unna. In the Gra:i<l National Stceplech.use, in particuLu good ones ar<* very scarce. The b«-t nomination of the lot was that for the W inter Cup, in which a strong field has been engaged There row seems a chance of decent'y large fields, for the jumping laces at the iweting, however th» quahU turns out, aud altogethar the Grand National prospects vie a. little brighter than they weie a week or two ago

The Chnstchurch Hunt Club held its Pomt-to-Point Steeplechase, for a trophy presented by Mr G. G. Stead, at Templeton on Sa-turday Twenty-one horses fated tha starter, the race being- won by Messrs Elworthy Bros.' Srvagger, ridden by Mr F. Evans. Mr M. Orton's Dugald was second and Miss Rutherford's Glenogie third. The race was run over a course of about five miles of good country. The jumps were enough to try tho j"umping abilities of all the competitors, and falls wfre numerous, though none )f tliem proved ?wious

The Election Committee of Mr T. H. Davoy, M.H E , presented him with a case of pipes last week on the eve of his departure for Wellington to take up his parliamentary duties. A commission was executed last week on the New Zealand Cup in favour of Great Gun, who was backed to win £6000.

The first two Cup scratchirgs for the N>w Zealand Cup were announced on Monday morning, when Cannae Chiel and Quainman dropped out. Quurryman will be reserved, I expect, for some of the valuable races over a shorter journey for wlucli he is ehgib'e next season

Naic-issus and Ixia. changed ha.-cl- on Sat'iidav, the former for 57 guineas and the latter

for 22 guineas. Since he came to Eiccarfcon Ixia has fai'ed to ?how any form at all.

Sir George Clifford has sod Dirk to a Kaikoura owner.

Social Pest left the course lame one day last week, and fears were entertained that something serious waa amiss. He put in an appearance again this morning, however, and seemed to go quite soundly. Thunderer, the brother to Kelburn, has joined Free Holmes's string. Holmes is busy just now breaking in two of Mr Friedlander's ycung ones — a filly by Cuirassier — Anita and a filly by ClanranaloWlris.

Sultana is doing good work at Riccarton, and shou'd ran well at Wellington if he is decently treated by the handicapper.

W. Pine is breaking in the rising two-year-o!d filly sister to Secret Society.
