Harvested An nually.
Of what is termed "the harvest of the se-a" we often read ; but do we adequately appreciate the extent of the material wealth
that is annually retted from the oc-ean fly the hardy fisherfolk aiound our roasts? As will be understood, we are not m any way contending that to b?oonve a "hand" in a fishing smack is -to adopt a likely load to riches. But in considering this subject we can soaitely fail to be impressed by the fact that the "navy of the net" dccG succeed in yearly winning fiom the waves what is re-afly a. burpna-ns; total in pounds sterling. In the picture four fisherman aboard their smack are seen hau'ing m a well-filleel net. These men, uj> ia explained, are, for v.*, representative of the 40,000 of their fellows who aro engaged in this arduous calling.
The net being drawn in we perceive it to contain s&ven fiph, which, as our hpace is lunited, we must accept as syml/ohcal of the total of nearly 9,000,000cwt of fish taken last year. And our pK-ture al-o affords us the information that the value of thits 12 months' "talc}" is, in round liguiot-, tomo sa\en million pounds.
