CLINTON.

May 11. — Harvest is still the chief work and concern of the farmers about here. True, some have finished le;ding-in, but the majority havo still some in ttook, while some even have crops still to cut. I hear of seme who were rather hurried about their kading-in, p.nd had to lead out agaiu, wasting much; but- these, fortunately, are exceptions. The mills ate about again, and if the weather keeps fine they will be able to go straight ahead; but if not, many farms will have to ba missed until the stuff can be got into stack. Town Board.— The Town Board election to fill the places of Messrs Irving, Hammer, and Bruce, who resigned, lock place on Wednesday last, when much interest was taken in the event. Tho poll resulted as follows:— F. Andrews, 42 votes; P. M'Rorio. 27; J. R. Ma.yson, 26; G. Cogger, 21; C. Eedpath, 17. Quite a crowd gathered at the declaration of the poll, when all the candidates returned thanks. Volunteers. — The local Volunteers hold a special parade on Friday next, when the election of a lieutenant to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lieutenant Hammer will take place. Sergeant Charlton and Corporal Begg, who also is entitled to a sergeant's certificate, have been nominated for the position, and an interesting contest is expected. The corps have now got the orderly room fitted up with all Volunteer information ; and, besides this, members can go in at any time, day or night, and read the latest papers or magazines or engage in a friendly game of draughts or single-sticks. This institution, which provides healthy amusement and recreation for many of our young fellows, has long been wanted iv our town, and it is to be hoped all entitled will get as much good out of attending as possible. Storm.— Last night (Sunday) ?. terrifio gale blew all night, and on lising it was found that stooks had been blown down and scattered all over the paddocks, and sheetn of iron blown off sheds, while there were many other evidences of a severe storm. However, good will result, for no rain has fallen, and as the stuff .has improved a lot fanners have been hard at it leading-in all day, and much has been saved. Telephonic— l understand that tHe guarantee has been secured for the connection of the telephone with Balclutha, and that telephones are to be placed in the houses of Messrs R. J. Irving and J. W. Thomson, and in tlie business places of -Messrs kelson, Garden, M'lntosh, and K. Irving, jun.
