HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors was attended by Dr Brown (chairman), Dr Shaud, Mr J. R. Sinclair, the Rev. A. Cameron, and the Rev. P. B. Frascr. Mr A. Hamilton wrote notifying the board of the resignation of Mr G. Gray Russell as the. University Council's representative on the board, and the appointment of Dr Shand in h'i9 place. Mr W. C. Allnutt, head master of the Kaiicorai School, wrote that on or about the Ist of June he should probably have between 20 and 50 pupils who had passed Class 6, and were under 14 years, and were therefore eligible for High School work. He a»ked whether the High School authorities would be prepared to receive these pupils on the date mentioned. — After discussion, it was agreed to reply to Mr Allimtt in the affirmative. — It was further reeolved to write to the Education Board and ask them to have as many aa possible of the town schools examined before the beginning cf the n&xt term (the let of June), and to invite the board to arrange a conference between the inspectors and the principals of the High Schools, with a view to making satisfactory permanent arrangements for the High Schools receiving primary school pupils. Mr A. Wilson, rector of the Boys' High .School, wrote that the board would be pleased to know that the boys admitted to the school by tbo recent arran.2e.men.fc with

the Education Department (63 in all) inn pressed himself and the staff so far a3 showing a good average of material — better, he thought, than any enrolment in his experience of the school. — The board expressed their satisfaction at this. Miss Marehant. lady principal of the Girls' High School, reported that the school roll was now 151, being seven above any previous term since she took charge. She again drew the board's attention to her suggestion for the substitution of cookery,shorthand, and dressmaking for Latin, Euclid, and algebra for many of the younger pupils.— lt was resolved that the chairman should confer with Miss Marehant as to her suggestion. It was resolved to hold a conference with the Otago members of Parliament with a view to obtaining a special grant for rebuilding the Girls' High School, and also with respect to the regulations dealing witb free education at the High Schools.
