THE FIELD-TURNIP COMPETITION. The judges in the Otago A. and' P. Society's field-turnip competition, Mes3rs J. Sim and A. S. M'Kerrow, having completed their "duties, hay© handed in their awards to the secretary o£ the Otago A. and P. Society, who has, placed' < the decisions arrived at in our hands for publication. The. judges wish to say that they had in someclasses considerable difficulty in .coining to a decision owing to the keenness -of the competition, and they wish also to thank the exhibitors and residents in the districts visited for the kindly assistance rendered them. The following are the re>sults; — Class I. — Messrs Nimrno and Blair's trophy, value lags, for the best 10 acres or over of Swede turnips, any variety (to be won threetimes, not necessarily consecutively, before becoming the property of the exhibitor). The society offers £1 as a second prize.— George Juchol (Allanton) 1, Alexander Barclay (Baiclutha) 2. Competition in this class very keen. Class II. — The Mi.burn Lima and Cement Company's five tons of agricultural lime for the best 10 acres or over of Aberdeen turnips, any variety ; £1 as second prize offered by the society. — William Soufcer (Flag Swamp) 1, Jas. Bell (Stirling) 2, D. M'Leod (Palmerston) commended. Class 111. — The Milbuin Lime and Cement Company's five tons of agricultural lime for the best 10 acres or over of green crop; £1 as second prize offered by ' the society.— -George Niehol (Alianton) 1, Walter Blackie (East Taieri) 2, Jame3 W. Blair (Outrain) highly commended. Clas3 IV. — The society's gold medal or tiophy, value £3, for Ihe best 15 to 30 acres of broadcast sown turnips, any variety ; second prize £1. — Murray, Roberts, and Co. (Gladbrook) 1, Charles M'Kelvie (Mokoreta) 2, John Douglas (Mount Royal) commended. Class V. — Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, ana* Co.'s trophy, value £3, for the best two to five acres of mangolds; £1 as second prize, offered by the society.— James W. Blair (Outrain) 1, George Niche (Allanton) 2, John Dow (Outram) highly commended. Class VI. — Messrs Joseph Fison and Co.'s trophy; value £10, and gold medal, for the hest 16 acres or over of turnips, any variety (to be won twice, not necessarily consecutively, before becoming the property of the winner) ; £1 as second prize, offered by the society. — John Blair (Outram) 1, Walter Blackie (East Taieri) 2, James Blair (Outram) highly commended. Class VII. — Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co.'s " Challenge ' trophy, marble and bronze ciock, value 15gs, and gold medal, for the best 10 acres or over of turnips, any variety, grown with not more tha-i 3cwt "Challenge" manure (the trophy to be won twice, not necessarily consecutively, before becoming the absolute property of the winner.— George Niehol (Allanton) 1, Alexander Bars-lay (Balclutha) very righly commended, J. Williamson (Allanton) highly commended, John Blair (Outram) highly commended. At Naseby during his visit Dr Ogston discussed the question of drainage, and said he thought a septic tank would be suitable, although there was no immediate need for one. He preferred the hills about Sutton for a sanatorium. He found the town of Naseby in a clean and satisfactory state. He ordered a number of alterations to be carried out at the slaughter-houses.
