Bookham-Mouat Memorial Trophy.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — A suggestion, which appears to me to hi an excellent one, has beer, made that the competition for the above trophy should be by means of an inter-club correspondence tourney. The idea of inter-club contests by telegraph locks well on paper, but, I am afraid, would bo entirely impracticable, both on the score of expense and not having control of the wires, but being dependent on. the generosity of the Telegraph Department, which certainly has bsen in the. past of a very liberal order. It would, however, be unreasonable to expect too much from the compartment, and, further, the contest being uiwkr the auspices of tho New Zealand Chess Association, other clubfe than thoso in th« lour centres, as originally proposed, would expect to be allowed to compete, and iv such case, even if the wires were always available, the- exDensa would be altogether toogreat for chess clubs, which, as a general rule, do not appear to bo overburdened with funds. I really think the correspondence idea is worth serious consideration. As you know, inter-club correspondence tourneys are much in vogue, in the older chess centres. — I am, etc., R. J. Barnes, Wellington, May 6, 1903. [We invite an expression of opinion from other players on this subject.— Ch. Ed. O.W.j
