ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of delegates to the New Zealand Chess Association, being the twentieth meeting of the council, was held in Wellington on the 4th met., Mr C. W. Benbow (local vice-president) occupying the ohair There were also present: R. J. Barnes (Otago), B. B. Allen (Auckland), G. Wright and R. F. Smith (Wellington Club), W. Browr and J. Perry (Wellington Working Men's Club), F. K. Kelling (Canterbury) E. W. Petherick (Palrnerston
North), and J. A. Counell (hon. secretary and treasurer). The Secretary explained that the election of officers would require to stand over to an adjourned meeting, the various affiliated clubs not having furnished the necessary nominations. Mr Benbow reported that he had received a letter from the hon. secretary to the. Rules Revision Committee, who stated that the Lyttplton Times Company hnd kindly renewed their offer to print' the forthcoming new mles free of cost to the association, and also to print gratis for circulation further reports and criticisms in connection with the filial revision. The offer was open for acceptance for one month, and the only stipulation made was that the revision of rulea drafted should be pushed on with expedition. Mr G. Wright moved and Mr Perry seconded — "That the Lyttelton Times Company's offer be accepted with thanks, and that the council regrets that any misunderstanding should have arisen in the matter." This was carried unanimously, and it was also decided to appoint a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Smith, Tanner, Allen, and Brown to examine the draft rules, and report tLereon to a special council meeting to be held on. the 18th inst. Th© Hon. Secretary intimftted that he -would be unable to offer himself for re-election, as his duties had bsen greatly augmented some months ago, necessitating hip working a lot of overtime and preventing him from devoting to the association's executive office the time that was absolutely •necessary to do it justice. He did not wish to hamper the council, but felt quits unequal to the present double strain. The Chairman asked delegates to note the position, with a view to the nomination of a successor, it being unfair to ask 2ftr Connell to keep on struggling under the double load. Mr Benbow read a letter received from tho Canterbury Ch'ass Club in response to Tiis circular letter on the subject of the association's official organ. Replies from some of the affiliated clubs were still outstanding, and consideration of the matter was therefore deferred, the secretary being, however, authorised to report the current meeting for the Evening Post. On the mction of Mr Bamcs, it was decided to adjourn the meeting till the Bth prox., the affiliated clubs to be requested to furnish nominations of president and vice-presidents at once, these nominations having to be submitted to affiliated clubs at least 14 days prior to the date of election. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
