ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Aldoweie.—Letters and papers received with many thanks. Duffer.—We have i:o doub: the Otago Chess Club will be glad to have you as a member. The subscription is j£l Is per annum. If a player takes a pawn "en passant," it counts as a move, and his opponent moves next. R. J. Baekes, Wellington.—The" reply—"Aio te Balk vincere posse"—had, we thought, indicated with sufficient clearness our opinion that the result Mould have been a draw had you played p-kt 4 instead of k-q 3 for your G3rd move in the game between Mr O. Balk and yourself in the late contest loi the New Zealand Championship. L. Neil, Conical Hi!!.— Solutions of Problems 1901 and 1092 duly received. You have solved both correctly, but the author's solution of 1992 is far prettier than the one you have submitted, as you will observe, when it is published in dus rotation. Referring to your remarks, we have reason to believe there is quite an army of silent solvers scattered up and down the colony, and we would be very glad if they would indulge in the luxury of a penny post-card, and let us know that the work entailed in the editing of this column is not altogether nugatory.
