WINNING SIRES.

The return of tho winning sires, compiled for the "Au.=trn!n?ian Turf Register" on tha tl'ird quarter of the- present season, finds Pilgrim's Progress cceupyin;? the pride of pace with £10.561£- to h : s credit, which amount was secured by 17 horses, who captured 29 races between them, and. in addition, gained second money on 33 occasions. Consequently the imported sou of

Isonomy and Pilgrimage lands in New Zeft= land with his laurels still fresh upon him, and it should be highly gratifying .to Mr Freidlander to find his recently-afu..tfed purchase in such an enviable position. -L'he following is a list of the sires whose stock have won £1000 and upwards: —

THE V.R.C. AND THE MELBOURNE HOSPITAL. The V.R.C, having been taken to task by Mr Jeffries for not :ontributing toward* the funds of the Melbourne Hospital, Mr IT. Byron Mooro wrote, explaining the position of his club in the matter. In that letter Mr Mocre said: — When any registered jockey is injured (anywhere in Victoria), he is paid £1 10s per week if single and S3. a. week if married till he is able to resume work. We have a fund of over £7030, that has been built up with much care, and we disburse from this and our own funds over £1000 per annum in assisting those injured and those who require help. We have a casualty room, fitted with every comfort, that will accommodate four patients and two nurses when it is desirable to keep a patient on tho spot. We have a- paid surgeon and paid dresser, paid out of our own funds, besides two honora*. ries, Sir Thomas Fitzgerald and Dr A. S. Gray. We also have a lodge for convalescents, with two bedrooms and a sitting roon? for their accommodation. This cost the club nearly £1000, and invalids are entertained there at our expense. If other sections of the community looked after their sick and injured as we do, there would bo little necessity for public hospitals. Some cases of permanent injury we have supported for many years. Another point taker 1 by Mr Moore was that the V.R.C. solicitors advised that the committee had no power to donate dub funds to the hospital. Mr Moore also said that the olub paid the expenses of any jedceys injured at Flemington who were treated at the hospital. At a meeting of the Hospital Committee on Tuesday, April 21, Mr Jeffries maJmtained his ground. He «aid that from 1880 to April 21 this year, 35 jockeys ssnt in from Flemington had been treated, and not one paid for. He also scoffed at the 'lub's inability to contribute owing to legal difficulties. Mr Jeffries said his remarks about the V.R.C. applied equally to the V.A.T.C. and the M.C.C. Both the V.R.C >and V.A.T.C, it may be» mentioned, have their own hospitals, and the VA.T.C. have treated injured jockeys for days, the club providing doctors and nurses. Mr T. W. Moule, the V.A.T.C. Eeoretary, states that his club do not send any of the accident oases arising on the Caulfield course to the Melbourne Hospital, but to fie Alfred Hospital, which is the nearest institution. AH cases «enfc to that institution by the club are paid for, and in adition tho V.A.T.C. havo annually given a donation of £10 10s to the funds of tho Alfred Hospital for a term extending over many years.
