Mrs Mellor, one of the oldest resident* of Matakanui, died on Friday. April 24, and was buried on the following Sunday in the Drybread Cemetery. She was 60 years of age, and was well known and respected throughout the whole of the" district. j The death is reported of an old Oamaru I identity in the person of Mr W. J. Maddern, on the West Coast. Sir Maddern was manager of the Newton River Hydraulic Sluicing Company, and was at one time well known in cricketing circles. She will be deeply missed by all classes of the community, and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband. Mr 3 Alexander Mowat, one of the earliest settlers in tho Awatere district, died on the Bth inst. ; aged 73 yenrs. She arrived at Nelson in the shin Mary Ann. in 1842.
