WELLINGTON.
During the month of March there were 3040 arrivals in the colony, and 2762 tcok Their departures. The l&.ppctive figures fcr March ISO 2 were 1946 and 3712. \ corporal in a Wellington Volunteer Corps, who wa/3 recently convicted in the Police Court of killing a sheep by shooting at from a railway carriage when returning from rifle practice, has been dismissed from the force. The Manawatu Daily Times states that the position of Dairy Commissioner has beeu offered to Mr D. M'Gowan, otic of the Government'a butter instructors, and that ho will probably accept the position. The same paper also states that 15,000 carcases of mutton, bearing the Government etamp and shipped from Auckland to London by the Malotua, were described on the Smithfield Market as emaciated, and a disgrace to the colony. New 9 has been received in town of the death in London of Mr N. W. Levin, founder of the firm of Levin and Co., of this city. Deceased was 84 yeara of age. It is not considered probable that recourse to the Compensation Court will be necessary in connection with the acquirement by the Government of 21,000 acres or the Mount Yernon Estate, in Hawke'a Bay. At a meeting of Scotsmen on Monday it was decided that a Sir Hector Macdonald memorial fnnd be established in Wellington. A committee was appointed to administer the fund.
