The cost of the tourney was estimated at £300, subscriptions for about half of which amount had been obtained at tha middle of February. The procedicg championship tourney was held at Durr ban in 1899. The chief sensation during tho first round of th« Monte Carlo Tourney waa the success of Herr Mieses with the Danish Gambit. An attack which ha 3 brought about Ihe overthrow in little more than 20 moves of such players as Mr Marshall, Mr Pillsbury. and Heir Wolf is deserving of mora attention thar. it has hitherto received; and one outcome of the tourney that may be looked for ia the revival of the Danish Gambit. Two of Hen Mieses'a games are given in this column.
