MEMORIAL TO THE LATE HON. W. ROLLESTON.
Mr Jamffl Allen, M.H.R.', Has asked us to' publish the following "circular letter" which he 'h&n addressed to a number of public "men and others in Otago, The effort to raise a mc-morial to the late Mr Rolleston. will no doubt meet jvith the ready, sympathy of many of those "who admired !ii» sterling character and great political services. 90* Clyde street, Dunedin, 30th March, 1903. Sir,— At a public meeting held in Christchurch on the 18th of March, oh the motion of the Hon. C. C. Eowen it was resolved to erect a statue in memory of the Hon. "William, Rolleston. It is believed that there are many persona in the provincial district of Otr.go and Southland who would gladly take naxt in this movement. Although it is quite fitting that sucha memorial should be placed in Christchurch. yet all who value those high qualities for which Mr Rolleston was distinguished would consider it p. privilege to assist in doing honour to his memory. It is as n colonial statesman, distinguished not onbr by wisdom- and liberality. ' but above all by absolute integrity, purity, and singleness of purpose, that Mr Eolleston's memory will be perpetuated. It is in the belief that you would desire lo be identified with this movement that you are invited 1c enter your name as a subscriber to thp " Rolleston Memorial Fund." "Whatever you lvav care to give I shall be pleased to receive and forward to the secretary in Christchurch.— Yours faithfully, James Allen.
The toaohc-r3 in the Hawke's Bay educational district are to receive a special course of instruction at the Technical School in Napier each year. The course will ccoupy three weeks, and will be free, but teachers will have to provide for their own raain- ! tenance during that period.
