Otago Witness Illustrations.
Sergeant Miller, one of the Seventh New Zealand Contingent, son of Stock Inspector Miller, Hastings, recently received, through, the Defence Department, a valuable pipe, silver mounted, bearing the Royal Arms, which was one of 16 of a similar kind presented by her Majesty Queen Alexandra to New Zealanders who were dangerously wounded at the Battle of Botbasberg. Sergeant Miller received a bad wound in. the right thigh whilst defending the gun which the New Zealandera eventually saved in that engagement, though unfortunately with a heavy roll of killed and wounded. The letter accompanying the pipe stated that it was presented " for distinguished services in the field." — Kinsey, photo.

Mr Axel Newton, 1.5.M., A. Mus L.C.M., who was educated at the Albany and Kaikorai Schools, and more recently pianist at Wellington,. is a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and for over ayear held the position of Professor of English Commercial Correspondence at the Borgare Skolan (Citizens' School), Stockholm. Mr Newton, was married to Miss Zelrna Salomonson, of Stockholm, on June 14, 1902.
Miss Cadogan is a pianoforte pup:l of Mr Albert Vallis, pnd hasbeen very successful in the local examinations conducted by the authorities of Trmity College, London. Percentage of marks obtained in theJumor examination, 88; intermediate, 100; and the Senior (November last), 93.
