1 "A Holiday in France." — This is a bright little impressionist picture, in which the groupingof the boys is particularly happy, the intent face of the young fisherman being well contrasted with the mischievous countenancesof his companions, who appear to be justbrimming over with mirth. The wide stretch of river and the low-lying, dimly-seen cottages and hills of the background would show that we are in a flat country not far from the mouth of a great river in NorthernFrance, probably the Seine. 2. " Drawing Water " is a street scene such as may often be witnessed in the quaint old-world villages of Normandy, where time seems to be of little value, and women spend many hours in fetching and carrying supplies which a colonial matron receives on her own doorstep. Here all the figures are well drawn and characteristic, though not very clearly outlined, and the light and shade are skilfully distributed. The curious old house in the distance, with its projecting upper storey is an example of street architecture unknown in the colonies.
