TABLE TALK.
MONDAY, December 22. TEe Dunedin Horticultural Society's Rose Show was held in the Garrison Hall on Friday afternoon and evening, there being a fair attendance on both occasions. The roses shown this year were not up to ihe usual standard, as the weather has been so cold and rough that it has been impossible for even the hardiest flowers to bloom in perfection this season. All things considered, the exhibits were really better than what might have been expected under the circumstances. Mr Robertshaw's orchestra played some, very pretty music, and tea iras supplied by Miss Murray.
There was a very good attendance at Forbury Park on Saturday afternoon, when the Forbnry Park Racing Club, which has recently been formed, held its first meeting. .Tnej; were fortunate » having $

beautiful day, and everything had been "done to make those present feel it was worth the discomfort o fthe crowded trams which were necessary as a means of transit to and from the course. The track was in excellent condition, and surrounded a beautiful green field of growing oats ; and as the • lawn had been well attended to, the fair sex had ample opportunity of enjoying a> nice stroll up and down in the sunshine. The refreshment arrangements were exceedingly well carried out, not forgetting the strawberries and cream, which were quite as much appreciated as the tea and cakes. The absence of the totalisator and the presence of the "bookies" ma.de one almost forget that it was a Dunedin gathering, and this more noisy form of gambling reminded one of other countries, or of the betting of bygone days. The dresses worn were principally of sombre hue, but a few bright touches of colour were occasionally shown amongst the parasols and hats. The weather lately has not been sufficiently settled to admit of bright colours being worn, and knowing the treachery of this season's climate, when a. fine day comes unawares, one feels rather chary of starting forth in^ summer garments.
