BALD HILL FLAT

December 17. — Welcome and much-needed rains have fallen here during the past week or so Previous to this the crops were almost parched out of existence. There is now a possibility, however, of there being something substantial to harvest, the crop in this locality being mostly oats. The grass is also coming forward, the only really spring weather we hava had being during the past fortnight, this being the most backwaid season ever known here. Scholastic. — The local school broke up during the end of last week, the occasion, being celebrated by a picnic and dance, which was, • unfortunately, marred tc a certain extent by the rain. Mining. — The Last Chance Company, whose operations have recentl-"- bee,n confined to some of the higher flats, had their first clean-up from this ground some dayb ago, which proves that some of the terraces and flats removed from the main run of gold may be payable if handled economically and got rid of in Quantity. Dredging.— The Molyneux F.alls Syndicate are going to work their dredge with oil, a suitable engine having been ordered for that purpose. When placed in position, they -will have 41-h.p., and those who have so;tne experience of oil engines claim that it can thus be worked more cheaply than with coal.
