IMPORTANT SALES OF AYRSHIRE COWS AND HEIFERS FOR SHIPMENT TO AUSTRALIA.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report having sold privately on account of Mr Archibald Ewing, of Mount Grand, near Dunedin, a selection of 15 of the best cows and heifers in his woll-kr.owa herd of Ayrshire cattle to Mr P. H. Morton, of New South Wales. The selection includes several descendants of the celebrated cow Stately, a cow of unrivalled excellence as a milker, and she has transmitted thi3 irre commercial quality, to her progeny, besides leaving mi unbeaten record in the prize ring where vei shown. The Mount Grand herd of Ayrshires is justly held in great repute, aud the fact that so experienced a judge of the nnikuig breeds of cattle lisa chosen puch a larga r.umbor out of it, after inspecting most of the other herds in the province, is a striking testimony to the general character and excellence of Mr Ewing's cattle. 1. Cow, Pride of Mount Grand, bred by A. E\v:ng; calved January, 1898; sire Tarn O'Shanter, by Curly (seven chanipioii and 14 first prizes in New Zealand), out of April Flower (Cowan's); Curly, by Master Jack (imp.) , dam Snowflake, by Heather Jock out of Stately Stately is now 17 year 3 old, is still fr,£feli, at.d is one of the gieatest milkers in tho herd, feme was first at Oamani as a two year-old 111 calf, and first at Dunedin in mi'k. Pride of Mount Giaiid 13 now dfy and in ca'f to Glengarry.

2. Cow, Jessica of Mount Cargill, bied by the late P. Ireland , darn Je= s io I, by Carlo (by Baron Oxhill, imp.), out of Judy, by Waitati Prince, sire Ayrshire Prince, by Ayrshire King. Jessica of Mount Cargill is now dry and is in ca'f to Glengarry. She 13 due to calve in Novembjr

3. Cow, Totara of Mount Cargill, bred by the iat* P. Ireland; sire Ayrshue Prince, by Ay_r-

shire King (24 N.Z.) ; dam Tottie 11, by White Prince (imp.) ; granddam Tottie, by Baron II of Drumlaung (imp.); ggd Kate. Totara of Mount Cargill is now milking, and is in calf to Glengarry. She is due to calve on the 24th January, 1903. She won two champion prizes at Taieri shows and three firsts at Dunedin.

4. Cow, Rachel of Mouut Grand, bred by A. Ewing; calved March, 1899; sire Prince, by White Prince (imp.), out of Jean (M'Farlane's) ; dam Susie, by Tumai Prince (Cowan's), out of Susanna. Rachel of Mount Grand is now dry, and is in calf to Glengarry. She is due to calve on the 23rd September.

5. Cow, Daisy of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing; calved March, 1899, sire Johnny Faa, by Lord of the lies, out of Killoch (imp.); dam Bella of Ayrshire Park, by White Prince (imp.) ; g-d Euphemia of Ayrshire Park (M'Farlane'a). Daisy of Mount Grand was never shown. She is now dry and in calf to Glengarry. 6. Cow, Jessie of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewjng; Sire Prince, by White Prince (imp.), from Jean (M'Farlane's) ; dam Jessie 11, by Ayrshire Prince; grand-dam Jessie I, by Carlo; g-g-dam Judy, by Waitati Prince. Jessie of Mount Grand is now dry, and 13 in calf to Glengarry. She is due to calve on the 12th September.

7. Heifer, Hilda of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing; calved March, 1900; sire Glencairu, by Ayrshire King (Ferguson's) ; dam Beauty, by Princo; grand-dam Stately (old cow), vide pedigree of No. 1. Hilda of Mount Grand is now milking, and was served by Glengarry. 8. Cow, Maud of Ayrshire Park, bred by A. and J. M'Farlane ; sire White Prir.ce (imp.) ; dam Maud I, by Master Jack (imp.).

9. Heifer, Amity of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing; calved October, 1900; sire Glengarry, by John Gilpin, by Hover-a-Blink, by Master Jack (imp.), out of Beauty ; Glengarry's dam, Bella of Ayrshire Park, by White Prince (imp ) ; as a yearling Glengarry was first at Dunedm and Taieri, and as a two-year-old he was first at Dunedin ; Glengarry's sire, John Gilpin, won five first prizes at Dunedin. Oamaru, Palmerston, Blueskin, and Taieri shows as a yearling , dam Amy 11, by Curly ; graud-dam Amy, by Lord Bute (Cowan's) ; K-g-dani Emma (Cowan's), by Baron Oxhili (imp ).

10. Heifer, Florence of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing, calved June, 1900; sire Glei> garry, dam Flora, by Tarn o'Shanter; granddam Amy 11, by Curly; g-g-dam Amy, by Lord Bute ; g-g-g-dam Emma, by Baron Oxhill (imp.).

11. Heifer, Rubina of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing; calved March, 1901, sire Glengarry; dam Ruby 111, by Ayrshire Prince; grand-dam Ruby 11, by Ayrshire King; g-g-dam Ruby; g-g-g-dam Young Dandy, by Kilbude (imp); g-g-g-g-clam Duchess, by Ayrshire Jack.

1-2 Heifer, Pearl of Mount Grand, bred by A Ewing; calved November, 1899; sire Prince of Ayr, by Baron Oxhill II ; dam Violet (Cowan's), grand-dam Maggie 11, by Curly, by Master Jack (imp.) ; g-g-dam. Maggie (Cowan's), by Baron II of Drumlanrig (imp.). Pearl of Mount Grand is springing to and is near calving. 13. Heifer, Mysie of Mount Grand, bred hy A. Ewing ; calved November, 1900 ; sire Johnny Faa, by Lord of the lies out of Killoch (imp.) ; dam Tottie IV; grand-dam Tottie 111, by Ayrshire Prince; g-g-dam Tottie 11, by White Prince ; g-g-g-dam Tottie, by Baron II of Drumlanrig (imp.) ; g-g-g-g-dam Kate. Lord of the Islea went to Mr J. Struthers, of New South Wales.

14. Heifer, Bloom of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing; calved February, 1901; sire Glengarry; dam Blossom, by Tarn o'Shanter; granddam Snowflake, by Heather Jecij g-g-daaa SUtels.ioids4Ml.

15. Heifer, Jessamine of Mount Grand, bred by A. Ewing ; calved January, 1901 ; sire Glengarry ; dam Jessie 11, by Ayrshire Prince ; grand-dam, Jessie I, by Carlo ; g-g-dam Judy, by Waitati Prince. Note. — Any of these heifers that are in calf were served by Glencairn, by Ayrshire King (Ferguson's).

The same firm report having sold on account of Mrs K. B. Ferguson, of Waitati, to Mr Morton, two of tho best cows from her herd, including the unbeaten Lady of Waitati. The particulars in full are as follows: — Cow, May Rose of Waitati, brown and white; bred by the lato K. B. Ferguson, of Waitati; calved 1898; siro Robin Adnir II (by Ayrshire King from Nell of Waitati, both noted prize winners) ; dam May Rose (10 A.H.B. of N.Z.), by Baron II of Drumlanrig (imp.) ; grand-dam Lillie (imp.), bred by Mrs Douglas of Renfrewshire (S.), and imported to New Zealand by Messrs Cargill and Anderson in 1875. May Roso of Waitati has been nerved by Bonnie Charlie, by Lord of the Isles, from Rosey, and is due to calve on August 26. Cow, Lady of Waitati, brown and white, bred by the late E. B. Ferguson, of Waitati; calved 1897; siro Young Glenham, by Glenham, by Baron Oxhill (imp.); dam E-ninia, by Ayrshire King (24 N.Z.) ; grand-dam Lady Emma, by Sir Robert, by Master Jock (imp.). Lady of Waitati has never been beaten at any show, and has taken thi following prizes— namely, firsts and chitnpions at Dunedin, Palmerston, and Waitati, first for cow or heifer bred by exhibitor as a three- year-old m milk in 1900; firsts and champions at Mosgiel, Dunedin, Palmerston, and Waitati, and first for cow or heifer bred by exhibitor in 1901 all when dry. Lady of Waitati w is served by Bonnie Charlie, and is due to calve on January. 18.

On behalf of Mr Peter Ireland, of Goodwood, they have sold to Mr Morton three selected cowa as follows : —

1. Cow, Rubinn, calved November 5, 1895, bred by the vendor ; eire Sir Patrick ; dam Ruby, by Ayrshire King; grand-dam Young Dandy, by Kilbride; g-g-dam Duchess, by Ayrshire Jack; g-g-g-dam Dandy (imp.). Rubina has been served by Duke of York. She was first as a yearling at Dunedin and Palmerston shows, and was second as a dry cow at Dunedin and Waitati shows 2. Cow, May Queen IV of Chetnole; calved August 15, 1897; sire Pnncj of Wales of Chetnole; dam May Queer. I of Chetnole, by Our Jack of Chetnole; grand-dam May Queen of Chetnole, by Master Jack of Chetnole; g-g-dam April Flower of Glenham, by Baron II of Drumlanrig (imp.); g-g-g-dam Queen of the West (imp.). In 1901, the only year shown, she was first at Duuediu, second at Pa.'merston, and second at Waitati as a cow in milk. May Queen IV of Chetnole has been served by Duke of Yoik.

3. Cow, Berbena Flora; calved on October 30, 189G; airs Royal M'Gregor; dam Flora I, 1?y Waitati Prince; grand-dam Lottie 11, by Baron IT; g-g-dain Ka,te, by Baron I; g-g-g-dam Euphemia, by T«viot. Berbena Flora ac a two-year-old won first prize at Dunedin, Palmerston, and Waitati in milk, and as c three-year-old she was second at same places, but has not bean shown since. She has been served by Duke of York.

for his Russlpy Ayrshire stud, Barrengarry, New South Wales, at very satisfactory prices. .

The cattle consist of Mr Gr.lt'a well-known three-year-old bull Premier, by President, out ' of the champion cow Stately, and also seven females— namely, Queenis, by Pieaident, from Stately; her full sister Violet; Alice, by Sir James, from one of Mr Gait's cows of the Mirley breed; Effie, by President, from Darling; Brownie, by Sir James, from Darkie; Peggy, by Sir James, from a descendant of Messrs Cargill ard Anderson's imported cow Comely ; and Jessie, by Sir James, ifrom . Beauty, whose ancestry can be traced, back to the Hon. M. Holmes's- imported cow , Crummy. It is well known that 'Mr Galt'is . Marairua herd is on 3 of the oldest established in the colony, and its necleu3 was formed by the selection of stock from Messrs Cargill and: Anderson's original imported cows, the firsts bull in use in the herd being Baron Renfrew. C Mr Morton is to be complimented on his good; fortune in acquiring stock from such excellent strains of the best Ayrshire , blood in this colony. The cattle will be shipped at an early; date to their new home in New South Wales.
