* HARRIER NOTES. Bx The Hake. The Port Chalmers-Pelichet Bay Road Race on Saturday is t:\ery day winning / more interest amongst harrier 3 in particular, and the fact that over 20 entries have been received is sufficient proof that the race will not fall flat. It certainly had that appearance a week ago, but the D.H officials have shown that thej possess a considerable amount of energy in the face of an emergency. There is no ceason why, if the runners make themselves fit, the race should not become st popular one amongst local ami- 1 tears. ' The distance (about eight miles) for a well-trained harrier is not out of the I way; the only drawback being the almost continual running on the hard road. • It i# difficult to say what would be good for the feet under the circumstances. No doubt they will be the chief source of rrouble, especially to those who have not dene enough, road practice. This seems to ibe the only way to get over^ it — good hard practice on the roads themselves. ' Tho«e wlio are making the journey to iPort. Chalmers will travel by the 2.30 train, "{•and- £fee race will start about 3.45 from aiussel Bay The officials, including the ttimtkeepers and others, will then catch the » p.m. train back to town. All other de- , 'Hails have beta well arranged, and, given "••l* fine day,- there should be no hitch. _ The ' Dunedin are unfortunate in ''losing one of their best members in the J' >erson of r J. S. Caldow. He left? fer Wclingtbri yesterday in order to try aud better himself in his trade, and I'm sure he carries •with him the best wishes of all his clubknates. Aa one of this year's committeemen, he has worked in a quiet, unassuming ■ray to contribute towards putting the D.H. »n a more solid foundation, and he ha 3 always shown himself to be a true sport. Perhaps when he gets a hit settled up north another harrier club will spring into existence. On Monday evening the committee met Mr Caldow to bid him adieu, and mt the same time to present him with a beau1 fciful tsilver-mounted walking stick as a slight token of esteem and respect. ' The St. . Andrew Harriers had a small Attendance last Wednesday. This was due, pot to the lack of interest on the part of the members, but to the fact that two annual football matches were played, and the harriers ranks were drawn upon to fill up some gaps. This afternoon the club run from Port Chalmers,, journeying there by the £.30 p.m train. '* *t The end. of the winter season it, drawing ]nigh, and the three harrier clubs close up with .he usual championships. If tho weather keep* fine the Dunedin Harriers intend ko h»ve a grand finale at Broad Bay in the Whape of a ladies' day. Tickets will be in circulation- this week, and it is anticipated 1 the drags which will convey the party will " {$>c taxed to thp utmost. Broad Bay is a . charming spot, and the drive down the bay . i/rift. in no small -measure enhance the day's ' enjoyment. There- is to be a Consolation ,\ Race on arrival, open to all those who bay» not won. a- prize during the year, and when that is decided, the ladies are expected lo jnsre all the good things spread out. It is not to be wond«ed that the outing is being looked forward to. •• -The Y.M.CA<- Harriere are wondering ■tv-bich of this yefcr's runs they' have enjoyed [icoet. They have been truly fortunate in ftheir invitations, and last week's, afi the ' jMrs Love's, Green Island, was no exception to the rule. Next Saturday the club will be the guests of Mr John Wilkinson, Nevada.
