THE MOUNT KEMBLA DISASTER. SYDNEY, August 19.
The inquest into the circumstance^ connected with the Mount Kembla disaster has been resumed. One miner stated that he used damp coal dust for tamping his shot. Another declared thai he frequently found gas in the mine ( but not a sufficient quantity to report. Yesterday's witness gave further inn stances as to finding gas in the mine. He saw it last nine months ago. H« reported the fact, and was removed from tlie place. He admitted that the man* agement was very careful, and directly they received the report stopped wort and took precautions.
August 22.
The Mount Kembla inquest is pro* ceeding. One of the mine deputies, in his evidence, said that all the working places were examined on the morning of the explosion, and reported all safe. Seven days before the disaster he cU$« covered some black damp in an abandoned working, but did not report th« fact.
The Hospital Saturday Committee makes a" general appeal to the publlo to-morrow to aid the Mount Kembla fund.
August 29k At the Mount Kornbla inquiry counsel for the deceased relatives announced that he had been instructed that there was gas in the mine before explosion) and that its presence was known.
August 24. The street collections yesterday iv aid of the Mount Kembla sufferer* realised £1000.
