WELLINGTON NOTES.

Bt OxLOoxm.

August 23.

Applications for the position of handicapper to the Masterton Racing Club were received to-day. Mr J. E Henrys was re-nppointed.

Siege Gun lias been backed locally for the New Zealand Cup from the right quarter, and he can be regarded as the Yaldlmrst atable's New Zealand Cup candidate. I attach no importance to the slight backirg of Romany Qu«en.

The following horses are in training at Tauherenikau —Rebel, Lady Field, Consistent, SaTacen — "Wairoa filly, Dede, "Whario, Rebellious, Boko, Tepako. Saracen— Merry Maiden gelding, St. Leger— Cuiralba filly, Oudenaxde.

Tire Jet d'Eau— Forlorn Hope gelding Waterford died at W. Davies's place at "Waiue)u last weak. The horse a few weeks back nearly lost his life through getting into iv creek at the back of the paddocks and never fully reco\ ercd from the effects of the immersion. While Davies was away with his horses a: the C J.C National meeting the horse, which was being well looked after by J Tel ford, m Lo:i»equence ol the mishap m the creek took a \ery Dad turn, and although eveiy effort was i&ado to -saw his life it was without avail. The geldmg was owned by Mrs H \Vs>ts.on. of the Oriental Hotel, and was held on lease by Davie3.

Adam ATMo-rran, who had Ihb right collarbone broken, is making a pood recovery, although it will be some time before he ib able to lollou hi:> profession. Ho speaks in terms oi prafse of the treatment ho received from Mr Starky, whose h«r3e h? w^g ridiiig when he met with the accideiu.

Tlie htulhon Conqueror fMedalhon— Siesta) has been iiurchaaed by Mr Douglas Gordon, auu will probably do stud service at thift g«nt'eniau's farm at AVaikarc.

At tli« annual meeting of the Nelson Jockey Club J. E. Henrys aud Uhc Shannon were reelected hajidtcappers for the galloping and tiotting cventH respectively.

Iko M.i-sterton Racing Club is experiencing some difLci. U in select ins; sii'taljlc dates for it^ spring meeting. In 19()0 Uie meeting was hold on OcinU'i 4 and 5. la«t \ cur on October 3 and 4 niirl this vrar October -1 and 5 was cliO3cn, but on the date h°in<r coniidored too rally 11 the season nn alteration wjs uiadi; to Octo'uei 2'J aud 21 To these dates the Marlboion^li Civ') ra:sed nn objection, anil the Masterion Cub was a^k^d to find others They then tlii,« November 5 and G, which it was thouglxt would fit. in with the Taratahi ai:d drter'.on nieetiiigs on November IU and 31. sa", being a reduction of £175 0s 5d for "the yeai-. During -the year the cost oi permanent tmprov*. znents to the training track, altering straight, and erecting looßeboxes amounted to £276. Thn club has a membership roll of 205. Tire stewards recommended that ihe same amoarifc ot stakes as last year (£2500) be placed at their disposal, and an extra amount of .£IOOO lor a steeplechase meeting if a permit is available. A Waveriey correspondent sends the following interesting items: — "Walter Best, on his arrival 'home with "his horses after the lete Wellington ni-seting, nams< xliately tnrned them out in the paddocks, they having caught slight colds Although not accept, ing with Frost ior tbo National Steeples, ie nail the full intention of undertaking -the journey south, but it appears Whangnroa -was no* «hgible to start lor the Enfieia Steeples, so he scratched them all. His horses have since been taken in hand in view of the Wangturui •meeting.

Charlie Berkett has been most unfortunate with his horaes. I>aertes has broken down ancl will not race again for some time. Halberdier, who is looking well, retnrnnd home from wo-rl} last Pridav very groggy Dn his front legs. M* Bennet informs me he hasn't a penny on his horse for the New Zealand Cup as yet. .My object m mentioning this is "that 1 notice A commission of 200 to 6 has been booked against the Cuurasaier gelding for "the Cup. Berkett has another addition "to bis stables in a three-year-old filly who is a half-sister to Queen's Quard. The string at the Momahaki stables is now bsing trained by Kennedy, sen.., who, it is to be hoped, will be inor-6 successful than his Ban. Being good sports and having a private track und «yery convenience a* their disposal it is surprising wearers oT the green jacket d& not go in for some young blood. MarianthuH and Moroahaki will be scon out at the Merton meeting, and I wish their owners every success for fhe coming ■season. At Featherston on Friday last Mr "W. B. Bidwitl, chairman of stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club, was presented wrfch a photo, of the club's racecourse and officials. The picture, which is handsomely framed and beaaui* » fully finished, was presented by J. W. Caret Mr Bidwill's health was drank iv champagne. Nominations for office-bearers for tho Wellington Racing Club closed to-ctey. There will be no election for the offices of pxesiflen't or vice-president. C. P Skerrett and W. H. S. . Moorhottse have retired from the stewardV " list-. The new candidates are T. M Wilfoxd, H. D. Nelson, and B. J. Jfathan. Notices of motion have been given in Ihe direction tsf licensing bookmakers, appointing a paid judge, amendments to rule^ to provide that the annual meeting of the club be held in fhe month of August instead of September, and that tho entrance fee be reduced from 3gs lo one guinea.
