BRUCE CO U NTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held yesterday at Milton. Mr W. Noble presided, and the members present were— Crs W. Crane, H. M. Driver, P. Haggait, J. M. Begg, W. Hcwit.o.i, Jos. Mosley, and G. T. Martin.

The Ccu-ity Clerk and Inspector (Mr A. Nelson) submitted his monthly report as fellows: Roads. — The wc--t weather hus made many of the uninew'led roads eoffc ard rnucldy, and there is little prospect of any improvement until the weather dries up.

Works. — The works on hand have mada fair piogress since my last report. The formation contract on the new road to John Grey's, Circle Hill, is now completed, r.rd' the fencing is also nearly done. Owing to the new fortnatiou being soft, the frame will be kept on the old road until the 'Spring to give it time to consol'daie. A start has been msda with the formation contract near Foster's, Milburn, but the re«c of the work is being held over until liie spiirg, as it is feaied tlvat if the earthworks are carried out m wet weather the road will ba made impassable for drny traffic. The metaling on a portion of the road through Waiho'a rotate ait 1 gia\e!li.ig <icar Berwick a^e now finished. A supply cf maintenance mctai lm=i beaa laid clown on the roi^'3 at Waihola, Cliu-eudoa, Glei'ore, Mount Stuart, Lovell's Flat, and Stirling. The surfacemen have been engaged in repairing tho Hillend road with maintenance mota 1 . The maintenance metal contracts at LoveH's Flat and Clydeva,!e punt road are -now completed. The ford on Wash pool Creek, Pukepito, has be-^n repaired, and the culvert at Bow»r's Creek has been stre^gthenetl by placing a quantity of large stones in front to prevent the silt being scoured away. The footpath at Stirling le&dir.g up to the schoolhonse has been formed, and is being allowed to settle before being covered with metal. A portion of the river bank at Gilroy'<i has slipped in, and stcpa are being taken to protect it from further damage by putting down sonic short piles and nllrng up the spaces with facines. Several of the bridges ai.d culverts have been repaired, and a supply of timber is being collected to replank a portion of tiip Matau bridge.

The Inspector also reported that hs had waited on Mr George Mooic, Pukepito, with leferencc to the widening of the road on the liver bank opposite I.id property. He had agreed to give all the land required for the road deviation for the sura of £5, which offer had bean accepted.

The rece.pts for the month amounted to £495 12s Id, and tho expenditure to £559 17s. The report was sdopted without discussion.

T'tE KING'S ILLNESS.

Th< Chairman read the telegrams which had been received from the Acting-Premier regarding the health of the Km?.— Cr Noble then expressed the l egret of the council at the lllncas of his Majesty and their satisfaction that he v?aa making piogres3 tcwnrrU recovery.

Tho Department of Roads mtimated that several local bodies had articipatsd the expenditure of money vote.l by Parliament for ro:i..ls and similar purposes by doing work to the amount of the items, and had subsequently claimed a refund of tLe money so spent to the extent of the appropriation, but that in future claims for works done before an agreement or some other authority had been entered into with tne Hon. the Minister of Lands would not be entertained. — Received.

The Secretary to the Department of Agriculture notified that the following weeds had been included in the second schedule as noxious weeds under the act of 1900 —Hemlock (Conium maculatum), wild turnip (Brassica campestns), oxeyed daisy (Chrysanthemum lencanthemum).- -Received.

The Secretary to the Department of Agriculture wrotp enclosing regulations made under "The Slaughterhouses and Inspection Act, 1900," rcqtunrg applications for licenses to be referred to the chief veterinarian for approval. — Received. I J. and H Campbell (Milburn) wrote asking the council to improve the grade on portions of the load leading to thoir property from Milburn station — r lhe inspector was .nstructed to repoit on the matter to next meeting.

The Clerk to the Bruce Licensing Committee ■wrote stating thut W. Anderson, of Glenore, had had his license for the Victoria Hotel extended for three months on payment of the proportion of the annual license fee — viz., £2 10s. — Received.

The Sub-committee set up to report on the maintenance of the Hillend road between B.ilmotal and Crichton renorUd that they could

not see their way to alter the p-xsb arrangement — i.e., that the Balmoral Riding should contribute three-fouxths and the Ciichton Puding one-fourth towards the formation and metalling of the Hillend read. The Committee further recommended Cr Begg to extend tho present contract as long as- possible, so as to give the Cnchton Riding time to meet the demands made on it under the present contract for installing the road. — Adopted.

Notice was given, in statutory form, of the intention of the council to levy the ordinary lates for the year.

On the motion of Cr Martin, it wa3 decided to call the attention of the inspector of stock to tho gorse growing on county roads.

Last Friday a most successful social was held in the Matau School to bid good-bye to Mi^s Early, who has been a very popular teacher there for the past two year*. During, the evening she was presented with a beautiful afternoon tea-set and some silver spoons, etc., while her sister was the recipient of two handsome vases.
