A SERIOUS BUT SUCCESSFUL OPERATION.

ALL FUNCTIONS AND FESTIVITIES POSTPONED.

Shortly after 10,30 on the 25th the Hon. the Acting-Premier (Sir J. G. Ward) sent us the following telegram, copies of which were following telegram, copies of which were also sent to all mayors, members of the Legislature, and others: — "Regret to inform you that I have received the following oablo from London, timed 1.35 p.m., 24-th : ' Acting-Premier, Wellington. Coronation postponed. The King to undergo an operation.' There is no signature to rhe cable, but I assume it is from the Premier. I do not think it desirable until his Excellency the Governor receives official information by cable for me to suggest what course thould be followed. Should the news be confirmed, all ceremonies in connection with the Coronation will require to be postponed." At noon the Acting-Premier wired: — "The second cable which I have received from jLondon from Mr-Beddon, adviping me definitely of tho postponement of the Coronation of his Majesty the King, m consequence of an oparation being necessary, requires me to ask that all public oei-e-lnonieß in connection with the Coronation "be postponed. I therefore advise at the earliest moment that all public ceremonies nrranged for to-morrow must not take place. On receipt of further advices fixing the date for the Coronation I shall advise you. — J. G. Wakd."

At 6 24- p.m. the following came to hand from Sir Joseph: — "Have just received the following telegram from Mr Scddon. timed liOndcn, 7.15 p.m., 24th: — 'Operation successful. Rumours disquieting. Pray God preserve his Majesty the King this hour of trial. — Seduon.' " The Acting - Premier added: "All telegraph and telephone offices •will reopen to-night at 7 o'clock, and again at 10 o'clock, and it is proposed to arrange for an all-night telegraphic service between here and Sydney. There will be no post and telegraph holiday to-morrow. Offices will be open as usual. — J. G. Wap.d."

At 8.52 the following came to hand: — "Have just recehed the following further cable from Mr Seddon. dated London, 25th. 12.15 a.m.: — ' N o change of condition in his MajcEtj' tho King. Naval re-view postponed.' — J. G. Wmu>."
