ALLEGED THEFT OF SLIMES.

. _ THAMES, May -12. - A great sensation has been caused through.-* out the Thames by the arrest of two "such-well-known residents as Cyril Douglas Finn and James Eagar on a charge of robbery, Finn being the son of a solicitor at Waihi and Eagar the representative of the Equitable Insurance Company. Both men worked' in the Waikino battery at the time of the robbery, in Ootober, 1900, s>nd both are well known throughout the goldfields. Slimes to the value of £700 hay« been recovered. One box was intact. Five were in the furnace at the Mahara Royal mine. Cyril D. Finn and James Eagar were charged at the Thames Police Court this morning with having, on or about October, 1900, stolen from the reduction works of theWaihi Company a quantity of slimes valued at £700. The case was not gone into, the accused being remanded and liberated ore bail, each in his own recognisance of £100 and two securities of £200 each. It will be remembered that in October, 1900, a sensational robbery of cyanided slimes took placet at the "Waihi Gold Company's battery ati Waikino. The slimes, which were valued atf £1000, were stolen at night time, and some* of the bags were recovered in the bed of the Waikino River. Mr Charles Rhodes, the. attorney in New Zealand for the Waihff Company, from information received,'^ travelled from Auckland to the> Thames in a. steamer the other day. He saw boxes o-3 slimes on the deck of the steamer, which! were removed at the Thames wharf anc-j taken to Tapu, where Mr Rhodes had ins formation that they were intended for th*j furnace room of the Mahara Royal battery^ lured by Finn.
