KAIKOURA (MARLROROUGH).
'May 4. — Last -week- was muggy, with light ■Winds from west to south-west. Much of the pnow melted from the slopes, and now only the Upper part of the range is white. Frosts have been much less sharp when the nights were fine, Our Harbour. — A heavy sea was running 'during the week, and not until -Saturday morning did the s.s. Wakatn arrive from Wellington. A topsail schooner lay at the anchorage here If or a day or two's shelter and took us back to )old times. The s.s. Cygnet brought the Wit■axesß from the south on Friday, also part of (Mr Boyd's plant; the rest (portable engine, ' /two waggons, and a dray well loaded) arrived pverland, and are proceeding to the Puhi, where Bawmilling should soon start. The s.s. Cygnet is to call fortnightly for the timber, and should foe well watched by the Wakatn. lest she should .usurp «ay of our ordinary trade. Valedictory. — Mr Mason was entertained at & farewell Bupper at the Pier Hotel on Friday Bazaar. — The bazaar in aid of the Drill Shed Fund is to be held this month; but, bless us, we country people are not too flush of the jaeedful at present. Potatoes. — The few who have potatoes are lusy digging', but the wet weather has caused fatany toxot. Out in 12ie Cold. — The Hon. John JSeddon quite forgot to return with Mrs Sedflon to visit this port, as he promised' when here, and surely he will bo far too elevated to Ho so after his Imperial tour, so we must look to other legislators to hasten the time of Jcridgea and rails. The manufacture of sauces and pickles has fong been a permanent industry in New feealand, and now chutney is Teceiving attention. Air Hogg, of Weodhaugh, k just ; putting his product in the market, and as I it is made from locally-grown apples, though ' fif course the other ingredients are imported, | t is doubly entitled to support. The local , chutney is in every respect equal to the ! Imported article, and probably a comparison i of prices would show it to be favoured in I that retpeefc a-bflk *
