John Skene and Son report under date April 15 as follows —We are very busy m this market at present. Plenty of orders in of all descriptions, but there is a great scarcity of workers. Wages keep very firm. We quote as follows — Ploughmen, 20s to 25s , milkers, 12s Gd to 22a 6d ; shepherds, £65, station couples, £65 to £75 , grooms and gardeners, 20s to 255 , hotef porters, 15s to 20s; harvesters, 8d to 9d per hour; potato diggeis, Cd to 9d per bag, poisoneis, 17s 6d to 2Bs , stat-on hands, 17s 6d ; fencer", 20s. cooks and bakers, 20s to 30s; station b!ack=miths, 25s to 30s , smart boys, from 8s to 12', and found.
The Premier has purchased 500 copies of the poem " Gallant Seventh," which was composed by Mr R. Howell, of Maharahara East, on receipt of the news of the Bothasberg disaster. Excellent progress is being made (*ay? tho Mataura Ensign) with the work of erecting the poles for the street lighting in Mataura by means of two arc lamps — one on each, side of the river. It is expected that everything will be in readiness to inaugurate the new system by the end of next week. Private residents at Matauia. are beginning to make inquiries regarding the possibility of the Southland Frozen Meat Company providing current for household lighting, and! it is not improbable that this matter will be considered by the local Borough Council in the near future.
