The Premier yesterday telegraphed in reply to inquiries when work on the Midlaud railway would be recommenced at Otira as follows: — '"Nothing- can be done at Otira ( rorge without the elaborate surveys that have been recommended by Mr Bogue. I understand from the Minister of Public Works that these surveys are hi hand." Tn regard to the proclamation of the Grey River as a sludge channel, Mr Guinness today received the following telegram from the. „ Minister of Mines: — ""Arrangements are now being made for an officer to proceed to Greymouth to pay the compensation claims le Grey River, and when the claims are settled the river will be proclaimed." Mr (Jordon, who assesses the compensation, is now on the Coast. An officer from the Mines Department is expected here in % day or two who will have the power and cas'i to settle with claimants on the spot. The chairman of the Westland County received a telegram yesterday that plans for the Hokitika River railway bridge will be completed on the 15th iust., when tenders will be invited. A departmental inquiry is being held today before- Messrs Jones and Richardson eoarerning the irregularity that took place in connection with the running of trains on the first clay of the Reefton races. The evidence and report will be forwarded on to Wellington, where it will be dealt with.
