THE CITY ABATTOIR.

The following report was iecehed from Sir W. D. Snowball at la&t weck'r meeting of the Dunech.i City Council : —

I beg to report that dumig the past year 14,930 cattle, 73,74 i sheep, 12,267 lambs, 3177 23ig3, and 970 calves were slaughtered at the abattoir. In addition to the cattle slaughtered for local consumption 4150 cattJe have been j sent to the freezing works for export. These , ■were, on the whole, of excellent quality and were very free from disease, only a comparatively Bmall number being condemned. • The total number of carcases condemned wa^ 229, being 230 cattle, 30 sheep, 23 pigs, and 16 calves. It j is interesting to note that whilst the number \ of cattle slaughtered during the past year is ' nearly double that of the first year of the abattoir's existence, the number of condemned cattle has not materially increased. Thi a , I 'believe, is due to the grcter care exercised in I /buying, and also to the fact that the sellers avoid sendirg any suspicious mumals to the saleyards. The buildings and appurtenances are in a good state ot repair. The adcht.cn of the new pig pen and the extra accommodation piovided for mvt f on has been of gr?rt sciwce. especially m the Lusy season, and the lomoval of theconcrete walls, which weie tci'aced by louvres and non gratings, has proved benefit ul, and met with the approval of the bu'ehers The following tenders- for lc-ioofino, thf tr.'in shed v,ere received; — Joliu L'mn, £272
