NOTES BY JAC KY.

The interest in bowling matters during last week was centred in the two tournaments held at Oamaru and Invercargill. In the list of players at the former 1 notice those of some of cur Canteibury friends and others from far-off paitK I have not heard how many rinks went from the Dunedin Clubs, but I was informed that the Taieri Club sent ten good men and true, and they will, as usual, gne a good account of themseh e3, or I am mistaken, although I do not see the magic name' of Carswell amongst them.

I only know of one rink as having gone to Invercargill from Dunedin, and it hails from the Caledonian Club. I trust that all will have a good time, and thoroughly enjoy the outing. The weather has been simply glorious, and if the pity is not good the blame must be put on the shoulders of the participants themsehes, as I am positive the greens will be in apple-pie order. On Good Friday, on the Caledonian green, tha members had a small bit of a tournament on their own account, when after a good day's play the Yates brothers, who had the luck to be drawn as partners, and who are in the front rank as players in the club, were found to be the winners. The trophies were, I understand, pipes for each. The Kaituna Club will lose a good member this week in Mr Eden, who lea\es for Western Australia on the 11th inst., he having received an appointment on the railways there. I have had the pleasure of his acquaintance now for a good few years, and it has been of a most agreeable nature, be«: h on the bowling green and elsewhere. I wish him all luck and prosperity, not only in his business, but also s-oeially, and if they ha\ c time for bowling in tbat land of gold I trust he will enjoy many a pleasant game there.

I can scarcely yet realise that poor Walter Carlton has removed from our midst. In the earlier part of my bowling experierce he was always a piominent figure on the greens, and a great favourite with all. I had a good deal to do with him in connection with the Dunedin Poultry Society, of which he was at one time treasurer, and then president, and can speak feelingly and positively as to what a good fellow he was, arkl what an amount of energy and go he 'had in him. If he took any matter m hand he usually carried it throtigh to a successful termination, and I can well imagine his denth will be a great loss 10 the settlers- in the Cath'ns district. May the sods lie lightly over his grave, for he was a good man, take him for all in all.

On the evening of the 2nd inst. Mr A. Potter, president of the Phosnix Bowling Club, who .has taken considerable interest in the colts of the club, and ha? forwarded their interests on the green on every possible occasion, was made the recipient of a silvermounted pipe, a silver match box, and a handsome walking stick. Mr Hayne?, in making the presentation, lef erred to the good offices of Mr Potter in teaching the youngsters of the green the art of bowling, and generally in making the game attractive to them, and the present was a slight recognition of such services. Mr Potter, in replying, said it had been a pleasure to him to "teach the young idea how to shoot," and he had no doubt they would prove themselves apt pupils, and mpko thojr marks on thr grpen. — X. l>.
