WELLINGTON v. HAWKE'S BAY,

The interprovincial cricket match Wellington v. Hawke's Bay was commenced at Napier on Saturday last. The weather was fine, but owing to the recent rain the wicket .was somewhat moist, end as it became worn the local batsmen in the afternoon had to be careful how they treated the bowling. Wellington went first to the wickets, being dismissed for 153. Upham played a fine innings for 52, until beaten by Dent ; and Tucker, after making 34-, also fell lbw to the same bowler. Richardson, with 15 and S. Hickson with 12 were the only others to get into double figures. Dent proved very destructive with the ball, bagging nine wickets for 57 runs. Hawke's Bay went in shortly after 3 p.m., with a waning light. Gore and Lusk got together for the opening of the innings, the first wicket putting on 35. Lusk was got cheaply rid of for 16. At 5 p.m. stumps were drawn for the day, Hawke's Bay then having six wickets down for 126. Of the visitors Tucker, until he retired, had a creditable average of four wickets for 42 runs.

A very interesting finish was witnessed oji Monday to the match which ended in a draw in favour of Hawke' a Bay. Want of tune undoubtedly prevented the local men from registering a win. Their firot innings closed for 156. Wellington responded with 134-, making 287 for the two innings. The only batsman to make any stand at all was Richardson with 36. It was 3.15 p.m. when Hawbe's Bay started to wipe off 132 to win, but although the team played until it was quite dark, Hawke's Bay were obliged to draw the itiinajis with the score at 123 for eight wickets, two wickets being simply thrown away in order to force the batting.
