A VICTORIA MEMORIAL.
PROPOSED IMPERIAL TRIBUTE. LONDON, Morch 27. The proposal to erect in front of Buckingham Palace a national memorial to Queen Victoria was endorsed by a great representative meeting at the Mansion House It vas decided to make an appeal thioughout the Empire for funds. The Kmg wiote to the Lord Mayor promising 1000 guineas. He approved of the proposed site, and hoped that a lasting and. worthy memorial of the great Queen would be elected The Rothschilds have subscribed 2000 guineas, and S:r Thomas Lipton and Sir John Blundell 1000 guineas eacli Lord Salisbury and Sir H. CampbellBannerman, being indisposed, were unable to attend the Mansion House meeting. Eloquent eulogies on the late Queen were pronounced by Mr Balfour, Mr Chamberlain, the Duke of Norfolk, and Sir W. V. Harcourt. Mr Chamberlain expressed the hope that, apart from merely local memorials, all the colonies would be associated in this Imperial tribute.
