HEALH OF COLONEL FRANCIS.
CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. Colonel Francis, avLo went to South Africa with the fouith contingent, and was subsequently invalided to England and then leturned home to New Zealand, died at 11 o'clock to-night He arrived in Canterbury in 1857. and had been connected with the volunteers for many yeais. April 1. The Premier and Lieutenant-colonel Newall -will be present at the funeral of the late Colonel Francis. The Government ■»ill grant free passes to all members of the foiuth contingent now in Wellington who wish to pay the lac-t tribute of respact to their late txinmander. [Frederick Wystt Francis was born in Essex in 1856, and arr.ved m Lyttelton m 1867 with his paients. He entered the Postal department, but after four yeais' service he joined the firm of Clowe and Co., wme and spirit meichanls, as a partner, and held his interest in the business ior eight years. In 1877 he became traveller for Manning and Co.. He was for many year 3 connected with the volunteer force of Canterbury, a"nd was one of the first m that district to receive the long-service m-edal.]
